In 2014, in the midst of the unrest in Ukraine, I went to Kyiv for a story I was writing.
On Friday, I realized I won’t make it home for shabbes.
A friend connected my to a guy Hillel Cohen. “You can always crash there last minute” they said >
I showed up to Hillel late Friday afternoon.
Hillel and his wife have a large family and a small home but I’m pretty sure the house miraculously expanded on Friday night.
There were probably two dozen people from all walks of life. Hillel and his wife were like family to them >
There were lonely elderly people, young single people, religious and not.
Every single one of them felt home, including myself.
Warmth and holiness I rarely experience before. Who would have thought that a boy from Brooklyn would have his peak Chassidic experience in Kyiv. >
When we were kids, We knew who those monsters are, and sadly, that they can act with impunity.
We were told to stay away as if our safety is our responsibility.
Thanks to people like @MordyGetz , kids growing up today can at least know that their safety is OUR concern. >
A lot of people are talking about due process as if it’s inevitably that justice will be done, but sadly, as Rabbi Kats points out, Brauner is a great example of someone who destroyed hundreds of children’s lives yet faced next to zero accountability. >
Some people have their empathy priorities so damn wrong. Talking about “destroying a person’s career” but seem to have little empathy for the destruction of a child’s soul. If we wait for things to “play out” we end up in a word where careers are more important than souls. >
It’s hard to overstate the significance of what went down the last few days with the Walder saga. For those unfamiliar, here is a summary: Chayim Walder is inarguably THE most eminent Charedi writer in Israeli but not just a writer, over the last decades he’s built an empire >
In the 90s he was a pioneer in contemporary storytelling with an emotional and educational angle. In a sense he’s the father of children’s and teen’s literature for Charedi youth His books and columns became the gold standard of good writing >
So many kids found their own voices in his 'KIds Speak' series which so eloquently touched on topics that children - and especially Charedi children - grapple with. he manually published several books that immediately became bestsellers. >
1. What is happening now is the culmination of decades of Hamas and Bibi Netanyahu cooperating together to kill the prospect of peace. It started in 1995 when Bibi emerged from America and led the incitement and protests that led to the assassination of Yitzchak Rabin.
2. Netanyahu took Israel from a nation striving for peace and stability to a country that takes pride in occupation and military might by emboldening the most extreme elements of society. He cynically capitalizes on the pain and trauma of the first intifada to get elected.
3. The passing of Rabin and subsequently the election of Bibi Netanyahu in 1996 hollowed out the most essential part of the Oslo accords -- mutual trust. Rabin was steadfast in his commitment not to let the Palestinian terror groups diminish the prospects of peace.
The tragedy in Meron yesterday is heartbreaking on so many levels but what's even more heartbreaking is the fact that it was avoidable and predicted.
A thread:
2/x Meron is believed to be the resting site of the Talmudic sage Reb Shimon Bar Yochai, who is considered the father of Jewish mysticism; The Zohar is attributed to him. Reb Shimon hid in a cave for 12 years from the Romans and is therefore also an icon of Jewish resistance. >
3/x The 18th of Iyar (AKA La”g B’omar - marking the 33d day of counting the Omar) is also called “The celebration of Bar Yochai” – it is the day he passed. It is marked with prayer, music, dance and bonfires. Mainly In Meron but also around the world. >
The kids in cages weren't enough for you.
The condoning Nazis and Qanon lunatics wasn't enough for you.
The overt racism and cruelty wasn't enough for you.
The rape and sexual assaults weren't enough for you.
It's too late to jump ship. Just hang your head in shame.
Let's not fool ourselves. If the coup would have been successful, most of those cowards would've willfully cooperated. Let's not forget who they -- they are already working aggressively to rewrite history.
All the talk about "unity and healing" is actually dangerous. The only way forward is holding him and his enablers accountable. Shame them, humiliate them, prosecute them. All the talk of healing is just to get cover until they try again to do the exact same thing.
