THREAD: On #WorldHealthDay, we spotlight @UKMed, a frontline medical aid charity based at the University.
Born of the NHS, they've been working for over 20 years towards a world where everyone has the healthcare they need when crises or disasters hit.

Founded by @anthonydredmond OBE, Professor of International Emergency Medicine, @UKMed works with hundreds of NHS medics rigorously trained for emergencies, and a global network of health professionals who are on-call to get to disaster zones at 24 hours’ notice and save lives.
In 1988 Tony led a team of eight Manchester clinicians, including Brendan Ryan and Donald Mackechnie, when a huge earthquake ripped through Armenia.
Tony continued to deploy teams throughout the 1990’s and 2000s, and registered @UKMed as a charity in 1995.
Today, @UKMed's office is situated in the University's Ellen Wilkinson building, and the charity works closely with @HCRInstitute.
The recent #SoundingTheSiren collaboration examined how the aid sector can prepare for the climate emergency.
President and Vice-Chancellor, Nancy Rothwell, sincerely apologises for the concern and distress caused by the erecting of a fence around our Fallowfield Halls of Residence.
The fences are being taken down from Friday morning. (1/4)
“I sincerely apologise for the concern and distress caused by the erecting of a fence around our Fallowfield Halls of Residence today. This was not our intention – in fact quite the reverse.” Professor Nancy Rothwell. (2/4)
"The fencing was intended as a response to a number of concerns received over recent weeks from staff and students about safety and security; particularly about access by people who are not residents. There was never any intent to prevent students from entering or exiting." (3/4)
We are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our staff and students; closely monitoring the outbreak of #coronavirus and seeking advice from the UK authorities, based on the latest available information.
You will have seen the Government’s latest advice in relation to coronavirus. We will be communicating with staff and students tomorrow about how we best implement this.
