So today I learnt Shias make the call for Azan a couple of minutes later than Sunni mosques & that is why we have recently begun to hear the call for prayer 10 times a day in our locality.
Now of course with Ramzan, we have a special hooter that goes off at 4.42 am & 6.40 pm - 2mins before the actual call…
With 3 Sunni mosques & 1 recent Shia mosque in the vicinity we are subjected to 365x10 Azans… each one competing to be louder.
Our little street dog, Lalli through her 12yrs would wail along side at least 5 times a day setting off the dogs in our homes into a right royal cacophony.
We then realised there was a particular base sound they reacted to & we neighbours joked that to get undisturbed sleep we
we should contribute towards a better sound system for them.
Till one winter 9yrs ago, 2 Pakistani-Americans came with a neighbour’s daughter from Penn State University on their 1st visit to India.
I’m told they woke up disoriented at 4.45 am, wondering where they were,
watched their hosts through the day hold phone calls, mute TVs, disrupt conversations, have babies & the old infirm wake up with a start & commented …This is not the India we are told about. To think you accept this so casually…!
Their host, our neighbour told us later that the irony of it hit him when he realised that it had taken 2 Pakistanis to tell him that.
Once residents of our street had gone to the local Police Stn to file a complaint against the high decibels we were subjected to day in & out.
The SHO had indicated his helplessness & said he could not endanger the lives of his constables who returned home through these very localities.
Go to the MLA he said …from where it had all floundered.
Everyone had backed off & since then we are exactly where we started off - with an additional Shia mosque to boot.
Some minor distractions on the political landscape-
Rahul Gandhi had seen the benefits of his mother’s clever strategy of ruling by proxy that he probably thought he’d be able to do the same when he resigned as Congress President.
But then Rahul not being his Mummy, couldn’t stop talking & putting his foot in his mouth. It is after all an art, to cultivate that Sphinx-like silence & deflect all criticism.
And Mummy, well Mummy isn’t quite AP…
But now the two of them, with sister thrown in for good measure have to deal with a bunch of old retainers, who they know only too well are quite unaccustomed to raising their eyes having spent their entire political careers kissing their hems & before that of Daddy, Dadi &
#Musings
For one Aqlaq, Junaid, Pehlu Khan, Asifa, a billion Hindus were branded violent, intolerant & expected to hang their heads in shame even before investigations were complete.
But for driving out an entire ethnic group from a State give or take a few hundred as is being guilt-negotiated lately, killing, raping, murdering, stealing or destroying their property, our Leftist-Islamists have not for a moment expressed regret for or even acknowledged
the crime but are instead looking for a ‘middle ground’ & screaming Islamophobia.
The irony of it would be laughable if it was not so tragic.
Kashmiri Muslim panelists across TV channels are jumping up to claim that many more Muslims than Kashmiri Pandits, have been killed.
UP.
Goes to show, people appreciate & amply reward vision, hard work, delivery.
The lexicon of politics in the heartland has changed forever. A tough act for other parties to follow-corrupt to the core, bereft of new ideas, left to embarrassing theatrics, desperate appeasement.
Goa.
BJP won despite the much missed presence of Manohar Parrikar, all the show & drama of AAP & TMC, a 41% Christian population!
It was around 2001-02
I first heard the name #YogiAdityanath.
It was before the time our workers had their own cellphones & so would occasionally come in the office to make a call.
One particular afternoon I could hear the distraught voice of a young carpenter in the next
room & then the phone being repeatedly dialled by an office staff member.
He was trying to get through to a PCO where the carpenter’s parents were waiting.
His mother’s wails & his father’s trembling voice resonated in that office cabin as they broke the news to him that
his sister had gone missing. To date I remember the fear I felt sitting far away in Delhi.
As he collected his salary & hurriedly left to catch a train home to UP, work came to a stand still in our workshop & we discussed Kamlesh’s situation.
The once-invincible citadels are crumbling.
People who thrived & prospered behind those thick, impregnable walls seem nervous.
Almost fearful that the boundaries they had carved, the exclusive clubs they had maintained, will now be overrun by different ideas,
thoughts, ideologies…
With little or no infusion of new blood in our arts,
literature, history, education, culture, publishing, films, politics have been reduced to mediocrity. Manned by zealous gatekeepers drunk on power & arrogance.
Nevertheless, new, brave names are now coming forth.
From quiet insistence to a suppressed roar they have begun rattling the iron gates of many a citadel.
It is a fact that since time immemorial, every civilisation & society has pushed for churn & renewal …or perished.
Imagine spending every waking moment cursing the land of your birth, taunting faith & culture of the people who live here..
All the while deluding oneself to be the progeny of the sword wielding, stallion riding vanquishers from the Arabee who once ruled over Hindoostan.
Only ….
to have that horse brought to a skidding halt….!
Then insult to injury -
to be actually told to go back to what one was in denial of & running away from, in the first place.
Oops! no stallion, no sand storm, no Arabian Nights in this story dear Scheherazade of #WaPo
Strange,this past year
a man whose metier was to accuse his own country of intolerance & fascism on every occasion was killed by his co religionists in an Islamic country.
And now it took the Saudis, the keepers of Mecca Medina, to call out this woman’s dangerous doublespeak,
