This thread is for all the beautiful souls who want to enjoy their hockey in peace. For those innocents who just want to escape into the pure world of sports and appreciate their favorite athlete without all those nasty politics.
There is a straight line between these two images.
So, let's go back in time for a bit, to 2014 when the picture on the left was taken.
This was immediately after Russia had annexed Crimea and, drunk on its rediscovered imperial ambitions, started the war in Donbas. Except, back then, Russia wasn't yet acknowledging it...
According to Russia's official narrative, Donbas had itself rebelled against the "Nazi" government in Kyiv. This was in no way true. Whatever separatist pro-Russian forces had existed in Donbas before, they were directly funded and controlled by Moscow.
And in 2014...
... Moscow had ignited the conflict by sending its operative "Strelkov" (real name: Igor Girkin), who had engineered the Crimea takeover, to organize an armed conflict, with a direct (though not officially acknowledged) involvement of 🇷🇺 troops
This is when the war REALLY started
Russia had successfully managed to obfuscate this and to even blame Ukraine for the violence and deaths that occurred. To that end, it began a big propaganda push, called "Save Children From Fascism", which distilled their lies into a simple narrative:
"Ukraine is taken over by a Nazi regime that has decided to racially exterminate Russian speakers in the East. They are literally killing children in order to ethnically cleanse the region. Russia is a benevolent provider of humanitarian help to civilians and resistance fighters"
This was the narrative that Russian celebrities pushed in 2014 and 2015. By far, the most famous of them was Alexander Ovechkin, the beloved whacker of pucks idolized in the US and Russia. He willingly and eagerly took part in a campaign designed to absolve Russia from blame, ...
... to place it on Ukrainians and to help Russia recruit volunteers to continue fighting in Donbas. Ovechkin slandered Ukraine and did his part to keep the embers of war burning.
But he did more than that. He helped to entrench the "Ukraine is killing Donbas children" line...
... in the minds of Russians. This is literally the No. 1 go-to propaganda line of Russian trolls and media pundits. This is what the Russian powerlifter said in her reply to Schwarzenegger: that Ukraine has been engaging in child slaughter for 8 years.
This was done by Ovechkin.
The horrible blood libel on Ukraine has permeated the Russian consciousness for 8 years, and the result is that Russian soldiers in 2022 are launching rockets at Ukrainian civilians, thinking they are retaliating for all those dead children.
And people die.
The missile that has killed dozens at the Kramatorsk train station today had the words "For the children" written on it. It was aimed to cause as many civilian casualties as possible. As vengeance. As terrorism.
Russians have been radicalized by propaganda for 8 years.
Many truly think they are fighting Nazism and saving or avenging children.
Think about that the next time you are donning your No. 8 jersey and whooping it up in the stands. Athletes are not only athletes. When they lend their names to a cause, they exert a powerful influence.
Absolving them from responsibility for that influence is wrong on many levels.
You have been doing it, North American sports fans and media, since 2014.
So, while this is not entirely on your conscience, you share some responsibility for this, too.

I interviewed Zhirinovsky in Sochi in 2014. He raved about how Russia must defeat Norway in hockey because Norway's herring is Nazi or something. He screamed about how Russia is always victimized. My impression was that he was a clown who had completely internalized his role.
Zhirinovsky's entire political career is a bizarre clown show. He founded a party called "Liberal Democratic" whose ideology was extreme conservative nationalism, rebuilding of the Russian Empire, fascistic militarism and a violent rejection of liberalism and democracy...
He was a pathological antisemite with daddy issues, because his father was an ethnic Jew (something he never publicly acknowledged, only saying that he was a lawyer, which in itself became an antisemitic euphemism in Russia).
His entire act was an absurdist schtick...

A thread on Russian disinfo. And yes, you might recognize these things as not exclusively Russian. But Putin's propaganda machine has perfected them, to devastating results.
First, a short personal reminiscence. In 2014, I traveled in Belgium with my family...
We stayed at a B&B near Brugues run by a kindly elderly couple, a Flemish husband and an English wife. One morning, we noticed that the hostess had RT on for the guests.
"Why do you watch this?", my then-wife asked. "I am Russian, and I never watch RT. It's pure propaganda!"
"Well, sure", said the lady in her lovely accent. "But what do you think BBC is? It's all propaganda everywhere. We might as well see all sides."
My then-wife had no ready retort. She just shook her head. Without saying anything, we both realized that we had heard this many times

I have kissed my child goodnight and I want to feel better about life, but I am looking at photos of corpses. Tortured, naked, burned to cinders. Men, women, children. I owe it to myself to look. I don't know how to go on with this.
But I'm not surprised. Destroyed. Not surprised
I have witnessed the nation of Russia slide down into madness for the last 20 years. I saw glimpses of it in the 2000s. I saw a whole generation of young boys named Danila grow up. They are all named after a character in the 1990s film "Brother." A killer for hire...
The movie Danila is a misogynistic, racist, antisemitic scum who kills without batting an eye. He also has a special hatred for Ukrainians whom he despatches in an especially brutal and humiliating fashion.
Russian audiences adored him. Idolized him. Named kids after him.

I know I have said this before, but I will repeat it again and again, because Russian propaganda is powerful and pervasive.
The word "Nazism" does not mean, when uttered by Russians, what you think it means. In fact, many or most Russian citizens DON'T KNOW ITS MEANING...
"But how can this be? Didn't they fight against Nazism?"
The fact is, Russians weren't taught this. They were taught they fought against Germany. And the word "Nazism" was not commonly used. Instead, the enemy was universally referred to as "German-fascist invaders."
This is key.
Generations of Russians have been taught that the Soviet Union won The Great Patriotic War, which it fought alone against the enemy whose only goal was enslaving the Russian people.
The larger "World War II" was rarely if ever mentioned. The West's role was minimized...

I'll spare you the full translation. It's easily the most horrific text I can remember ever reading. But I still need to explain what's written here, because many of you might not understand exactly what Ukraine is facing. Exactly what Russia's plans for it are
Brace yourselves🧵
This is primarily for those Westerners who still think this war may end in a compromise. That Ukraine may stop this by agreeing to some of Russia's demands (some of which may even be "reasonable"), or even that Ukraine, NATO and the US need to accept some portion of the blame...
Bear in mind that this comes directly from Kremlin-owned media, from their main news agency. And while this is a column by one of their propagandists, it fully describes the philosophy Russia is operating under.
It's nothing less than the philosophy of genocide...

"KGB Colonel Robs Saint Petersburg Blind"
This 1992 article in a local newspaper has survived thanks to investigative journalists who had uncovered it in 2007, despite the Kremlin's efforts to destroy all existing copies.
Here is the translation:
"Another scandal in Petersburg.."
A commission of lawmakers headed by Marina Salye demands to remove the chairman of the committee of external relations Vladimir Putin from his post.
The former KGB Colonel, while not authorized by the government, was handing out licenses to export abroad, for the purposes of...
barter trade, oil, timber and precious metals, to shady and little-known companies, often created immediately prior. Beside that, in most cases, the licenses were given beforehand - prior to signing agreements with Western partners and without providing documents proving...
