Strategic communication: creates understanding, drives agreement, and builds trust. “You’re all bad at it.” @skamille coming in strong with the harsh truth 🥲 #LeadingEngNewYork
Status updates are strategic updates. Good opportunity to provide reflection, education, and visibility. Good to do this regularly and have your teams do this. Useful record for promos and reviews too! #LeadingEngNewYork
Examples of good/bad status updates. Why is this update important? What context is needed? What did we do? What was the result?
As a senior leader, execution is even more important (but it looks slightly different). Are you able to keep your orgs aligned and focused? Do you know when problems happen early? Can you develop leaders outside your direct reports? #LeadingEngNewYork
Leadership meetings: weekly or every other week. They should be heavily participatory with cameras on. Don’t overstructure it. Topics can change with what’s important right now. Can include people who aren’t your direct reports like senior PMs, ICs #LeadingEngNewYork
Status update meetings: for real? For real. Don’t skip this!! Gives exposure, surface info, regularly scheduled, gives ICs opportunity to shine #LeadingEngNewYork
(I still miss the monthly all hands I ran in IAM 🥲)
Strategic planning: top down leadership is actually necessary here. What’s the themes of the org together (not from the individual teams)? Why are we working on this? What are we all doing here? Why is it important? #LeadingEngNewYork
There’s no one true way to do strategic planning, just do what works. OKRs, KPIs, 6 pagers 🤷🏻♀️. Be flexible and adapt to the business #LeadingEngNewYork
What do we want at the end of all this strategic planning? Stared understanding, objectives and measures (3-5 only!!), a sense of resources (people, money, systems, time) needed to achieve all this #LeadingEngNewYork
In order to get good outputs, we need good inputs. Current state of things, headcount, overhead, existing projects, variety of perspectives, and a retro of what happened last cycle #LeadingEngNewYork

I just gave a Security 101 for Seniors presentation to my mom and 10 of her best girl friends and they had such a great time learning! They’re in their 70s and get bombarded with messages about how everything is hacked and they wanted to be better informed about where to start
They had questions about VPNs, updating their router security, MagSafe, private relays… but also very few of them used a password manager or used 2FA
I spent a ton of time on password managers and the benefits of 2FA, especially since it protects both them AND their loved ones from getting phished. Their eyes opened wide when they realized that security is a community effort!
Listen, we need to acknowledge that spite-driven career development is a real and valid thing
Old boss said you couldn’t do something? Get that paper.
Broseph stole your ideas and got promoted? Become an expert and start your own company.
Someone doubted you? Make it impossible for them to ignore how great you are.
Be as petty as you want on the inside if that’s what motivates you. Become an expert. Get paid. Dance on the graves of the defining bullshit conversations you’ve had in the past. Help uplift others who have also been told they weren’t good enough.
Progress! We discovered Chris is too good at taking the dogs out on a schedule so we’ve introduced some chaos and altered their bathroom schedule. He’s successfully gotten us to the door and eventually hit the button twice now!
- #covid19 is a marathon, not a sprint
- this is not normal
- your safety and health first, work second
- over communicate over communicate over communicate
- kiddo interruptions are a fact of life (male leaders, pls demonstrate this!)
- don't cause more chaos than necessary
- model good behavior - TAKE TIME OFF REGULARLY
- did i say overcommunicate yet? overcommunicate
- reduced productivity is expected - have you adjusted your roadmap yet? have you overcommunicated it yet?
- different people need different things! some people need to work to feel "normal" and keep themselves busy. but keep an eye out on if they're negatively affecting their teammates
