"Saw your and Rupal's tweets about filling up water straight from streams. Planning to visit Catskills a lot during the summer. Is the water really 100% safe, especially for kids?"

A few others asked this so a short 🧵.

It is as safe as is possible. Kids, I don't have! 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️
It's not like I go slurping water from any and every stream I see. I do my homework online first. I've only drank out of natural streams in Himachal (Spiti valley), Iceland, Patagonia, & of course the Catskills. All are as safe as water can be.

No water can be "100%" safe.
Catskills specifically, is the NYC watershed. There is extensive management, testing, and tracking by the NYDEP. Detailed reports every year. The water isn't filtered before being sent to our city taps. Just UV treated but even that is more caution than necessity.
From my homework/research, no one has ever reported getting sick drinking water from these streams in decades, if ever.

DEP website talks about Giardia, which is the only real risk given the Catskills ecology. But even that is minimal to non existent if you use common sense.
My simple rule is, I'll only drink fast flowing water that is clear enough for me to see the rocks at the bottom. And Catskills water flows really fast. And is really clear.

I've been drinking it for years. Never once the slightest problem. And even online forums say the same.
So yeah, do your homework online. From NY govt websites as well as forums. Make sure you're drinking water from a stream that is clear, flowing fast, and oh yes, that you have a view of for at least a 100 meters upstream. So you can make sure no animals are there going potty.
Safe for kids and all, please don't ask me. I'm not a parent. Each parent has their own thresholds. I know people who will only give their kids bottled water everywhere. I know parents who will let their kids drink from streams. So that's really up to the parent.
All I can tell you is that in the decade or so that I've been drinking water from Catskills streams, I've never gotten even mildly nauseous. Nor has anyone I know. In fact it is very tasty and most satisfying to drink.

Hope this answers the question.
Now I do have a very sturdy stomach. Our @k_rupal doesn't & has extensive experience of food poisoning in India 🫣. But she's never had problems drinking stream water in Catskills, Iceland, Patagonia.

Hehe, unknown to me, @k_rupal was taking paparazzi pics of me posting this thread sitting by the very Catskill stream that we drink out of. 🤗 #CatskillsParadise
Heading back to the city, filling up "wild water" while also giving a demo of my rules. Clear, fast flowing, and a view upstream to make sure no animal is pooping in it.

You don't need to go that deep. Just testing new boots. Usually I fill from the edge.
#CatskillsParadise
Four liters of water in 30 seconds. So tasty!
That I can do this so easily shows why Catskills water is extra crazy clean. This is all glacier cut land. Not much left to erode. So most streams in the Catskills mountains are just rainwater flowing down a solid rock base most of the time. No soil or moss or anything.
"Is the water cold? It looks cold!"

messaged a friend. Yeah, like refrigerated cold. There was a snow flurry a while ago. It's still not summer in the mountains, remember? Spring has barely started!
But it will be nice and warm in summer. Swimmable. And omg, sitting in it and chilling with drinks and having a fire on the rocks and grill stuff on it. It is shallow enough and smooth enough to just sit like in a swim up bar bench. 😍😍
@curiousgawker
Fun fact. The movie Ice Age is roughly supposed to have taken place in this area, especially if you look at some zoomouts of Scrat. Those glaciers cut the Hudson Valley and the Catskills.

Ordered regalia for the Undergraduate Commencement (Graduation) next month. I'll be sitting on the stage looking like a Hogwarts teacher surrounded by solemn colleagues, and jumping up going "WOOHOO" every time one of my students walks. 😁

This year is extra special, obviously.
By typical US standards, Stevens is a small university with an even smaller business school with an even smaller Marketing undergrad program. And I teach almost all undergrad courses. And am the only advisor for marketing majors.

So I get to know these students extremely well!
So these 40 or so marketing major/minor/concentration students who will graduate next month, I have an extra soft spot for. They & I navigated these years which were literally THE worst years to be a teacher, but way way worse to be a student. Such bad luck for the students.

If in 2022 you're still in the "Bombay should be a Union Territory" camp, you are either extremely ignorant or extremely Modi loving. 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️
Even before Modi days, I never ever understood the bizarre armchair demand of making Bombay a Union Territory. It is so ignorant and so self destructive!

Statehood for Bombay, I can see the logic. Unlikely, but I see it.

Bombay Union Territory demand makes me always go...
The logic of "Bombay as Union Territory" people is that why should Bombay decisions be made by people from the hinterland (where most Maharashtra CMs come from), it should have autonomy and its own powers....so let's switch to a system where the Prime minister in Delhi rules us?

In my young naive days... Like 2019 or so.. whenever Twitter sanghis asked me "source? reference? link?" I would very sincerely furnish it. Hoping that the info will change their minds.

But they don't really want answers. They want an opening for more questions. Neverending ones
So nowadays when I see a sanghi swarm going sourcesourcesourcesource, I'm like, nahin deta source, uproot what you want to uproot. Main Kya Google dikhta hai Kya? 🥸
Funny thing is, NOT giving them answers actually makes my message spread wider. Cos sealioning is designed to keep you tied up in knots forever with a barrage of questions. When you ignore them, they get even more incensed and try to scream louder as if Twitter is an audio app.😂

Hahahaha it seems I've been living rent free in his head since February. First thing he does after Imran goes is looks up my old tweet to QT.

Thanks for obsessively remembering, Ajit. 😂😂
Bhaktfolk, I love it when you take my QT baits and I especially love it when you remember my QT baits months later and amplify them. Please continue.
Oooh since @ajitdatta is so kindly sending me free bhakt traffic, I better post some more Savarkar jokes. Bhakts love those.

Wait, there are actually people in India who think that Bangalore start-up dude offering bonuses to people with a Body Mass Index of under 25 was NOT a horrible idea, even if well-intentioned? Like Bangalore tech scene isn't already toxic and demanding and shaming-filled enough?
How can someone in 2022 not see what a colossally horrible idea it is to tie someone's BMI to individual bonuses? What is happening in India these days? Has fascism seeped in everywhere?
I blame post pandemic Desi LinkedIn for this.

A pandemic time love for R & I has been #DerryGirls set in the 90s and we often wonder, how did Ireland go from an extremely rabidly conservative, violence-riddled, and impoverished country to where it is now in just 2 decades? A rare positive move by a country in the 21st cent.
In 1986, Ireland had a referendum that continued the ban on divorce by a 64-36 margin.

In 2015, Ireland had a referendum that legalized gay marriage by a 63-37 margin!

That is a whiplash inducing pace of change in less than 30 years, right?

How did it happen?
Fintan O'Toole's book "We Don't Know Ourselves", reviewed in this week's New Yorker, lays in out in fascinating and acerbic detail!

Basically the hypocrites overplayed their hand after years of using hypocrisy to perpetuate orthodoxy & abuse.
