Introducing the Media and Democracy Project 📰 📺 📻:
We are a grassroots group of concerned citizens who launched an activist campaign in 2020 to demand that our media provide truth, context, and transparency in every piece of reporting. #FixMediaNow 1/ MediaAndDemocracyProject.org
We believe an informed citizenry is the bedrock of a democratic society. The information we receive from media affects and shapes our opinions, voting decisions, degree of civic engagement, and ultimately determines the health of our society. We must @FixMediaNow#FixMediaNow 2/
Robust news and democracy go together. “A popular [democratically elected] Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance…” —James Madison #FixMediaNow 3/
Over decades we've seen contraction of local journalism and intense media consolidation. The result is "news deserts" AND increased reliance on corporate media conglomerates for news and information. This outcome was shaped by legislative and regulatory choices. #FixMediaNow 4/
When huge media conglomerates own news, they put profits first. "Ratings are a kind of deity" —ex-@MSNBC producer @arianapekary. And with newspapers shrinking all over America, all outlets—incl NYT, WaPo, @TheAtlantic &c—worry about profit. #FixMediaNow 6/ cjr.org/public_editor/…
Neutrality is a value of US journalism, and means presenting "both sides" as equally plausible. But up against right-wing disinformation as strategy, that fails truth and democracy. "A balanced treatment of an unbalanced phenomenon distorts reality."—@NormOrnstein#FixMediaNow 7/
The newspaper implosion of the past decades has left a small number of big national outlets—like @nytimes@washingtonpost—as the survivors that collect most of the profits in the industry, growing ever larger and exerting an outsized role in "informing" America. #FixMediaNow 8/
What do we do at the Media and Democracy Project?
We organize people and build community and activism about media, messaging and the factors that impact democracy. We meet regularly, hold seminars, and most importantly organize actions and move towards solutions. #FixMediaNow 10/
We actively work toward a better democracy by educating and engaging folks to demand and fight for strong, independent media that informs voters so they can make effective, informed decisions. RSVP @nandoodles@CheckMyAdsHQ Tuesday 4/12 8p mobilize.us/mobilize/event…#FixMediaNow 11/
We communicate about problems in media and talk about how to improve media. Our team @FixMediaNow calls out corporate control—and failures like neutral #BothSides journalism, horse race/savvy coverage, and laundering bad faith GOP talking points. #EricBoehlert#FixMediaNow 12/
What's a MAD Meme Team? "We create messages that support Truth, Democracy & Progressive Ideas." Our Meme Team makes and distributes timely memes and infographics #GinnisDocket, and amplifies #FieldTeam6#Voterizer#DemCast. Follow and support them! @MADMemeTeam#FixMediaNow 13/
We advocate for media support—and media regulation—that serves the common good. We mobilize folks to take action. Recently: Letters to the Editor; organizing calls to Congress to advance Gigi Sohn @gigibsohn@FCC and Alvaro Bedoya @alvarombedoya@FTC nominations. #FixMediaNow 14/
The Media and Democracy Project is a passionate all-volunteer community. We need YOU to help us make positive change in media AND democracy. Follow us on socials, sign up for our emails, come to our next event, collaborate with us 🇺🇸 #FixMediaNow 15/fin MediaAndDemocracyProject.org

Absolutely excellent piece from @pareene here about the right wanting to destroy journalism. Their “journalism” outlets are pale shadows of news; their goal is to assert power. @drvolts has been on this beat for a long time. Here’s some more — in thread…
