In one of the most policed cities, with the largest police force, with a budget bigger than many countries, with officers at every subway stop harassing unhoused people and vendors—cops don't prevent or stop violence. No amount of cops or funding for cops will get us to safety.
Predictably, this will be exploited to try & push for even more cops & police funding—it's already begun.
Read our resource Cops Don't Stop Violence & fight back against copaganda & false narratives being used to justify pouring more $$$ into policing:
U.S. police departments in general take the greatest percentage of city and county budgets compared to other municipal departments like housing & healthcare. And since backlash against #DefundPolice began, cities are pouring even MORE money into already bloated police budgets.
Re: All the talking points many will jump to about combating "rising crime." Learn more about manipulated data, "crime," & how you can't conflate it with violence.
Also like, cops are just bad at what they're ostensibly supposed to do (e.g. solving crime)
The bottom line is that police don’t prevent or stop violence, no matter how high their budgets are.
They *DO* cause and commit tremendous violence to our communities. Stop resourcing policing instead of investing in community-based strategies & support bit.ly/CopsDontStopVi…
What could we imagine & build instead, if we reallocated the money we currently pour into violence, into meeting community needs? If we created systems that support & expand our ideas of safety?
