CoVac-1 is an experimental #COVID19 peptide vaccine designed to maximize T-cell response. In a Phase I/II study, it induced T-cell responses in ~90% of immunocompromised people with impaired B-cell function. @LabWalz #AACR2022#AACR22 bit.ly/3O3tytP
The CoVac-1 vaccine includes peptides from 6 viral components, not just the spike protein targeted by the vaccines approved in the U.S. More targets could mean better durability as spike mutates.
CoVac-1 was given as a single injection in the abdomen, which could be a barrier, both for the needle-averse & in terms of administration logistics. (Not clear if upper arm injection would be feasible.)
This study enrolled mostly people with leukemia or lymphoma (& a few with primary B-cell deficiency), but seems like it would also be applicable to organ transplant recipients & people with autoimmune conditions who take meds that impair B cell function.
At an #AACR22 press conference today, Claudia Tandler noted that a Phase III trial with a larger population of immunocompromised people is in the works. @LabWalz#AACR2022
I was an early mask adopter -- & they make intuitive sense -- but a growing body of evidence shows that mask mandates don't appear to make much difference at the community level.
In the U.S., communities with & without mask mandates have had similar case trajectories. Worldwide, countries with a high level of cultural acceptance & near-universal mask use have not escaped steep waves similar to those seen in more mask-resistant countries.
Well-fitted N95s are highly protective, but we're doing vulnerable people a disservice by leading them to believe that real-world mask use -- typically involving flimsy cloth or surgical masks -- offers them meaningful protection.
Beagle testing is a widespread practice. There's likely a university, consumer product company or pharma company doing it in your state. Some research is funded by NIH (Fauci's agency), but academia & industry fund it too. 2/
Beagles were probably originally chosen because they're small, easy to care for, good natured & will tolerate anything for food. They've become the standard & companies (like Charles River Labs in MA) breed them for research. 3/
As an adopter of research beagles, this makes my heart hurt. A lot of research on dogs & primates is unnecessary to protect human health. At the same time, I recognize it's being used as a right-wing talking point to attack Fauci's views about COVID.
This kind of animal research is nothing new. If this fracas makes more people across the political spectrum aware of alternatives to animal testing, that will be a silver lining. @beaglefreedom@WhiteCoatWaste
@beaglefreedom@WhiteCoatWaste If initiatives to reduce unnecessary animal testing come from the right because they hate Fauci, that will be quite a thing. I sure hope liberals don't oppose it simply because the right is in favor.😕 @ggreenwald
