1/So I'd like to share something personal... I've been following @elonmusk and his actions for many, many years and think he is on the wrong side of many important issues. Today I saw him speak at #TED2022 and I may marginally have more insight into his mindset.
2/I believe he is acting in good faith: he is who he pretends to be. That said, he is also a deeply neurodivergent person who has trouble to relating to societal norms or indeed to other people. I believe this makes him uniquely qualified to lead a kind of cult.
3/That cult is dangerous, in that it doesn't know what it doesn't know, and is deeply solipsistic and ultimately gnostic. To understand this cult... spend more time in it. That's deeply unhealthy. By wiring up his brain (by any measure impressive) to the internet, we...
4/enable a kind of cult creation machinery that is difficult to interrupt. It's a kind of "black hole of social capital," as I told one friend today. That kind of black hole can be difficult to escape. This ends up being in opposition to institutions and democracy...
5/and we need to defend those things against "deep solipsism." Ultimately I think Musk wants some positive things (renewable energy; exploration; an optimistic view of the future), but he may be so ideologically wedded to libertarian ideals as to be counterproductive.
6/After seeing Musk speak today I find myself conflicted; my left brain condemns most all of what he says, while my right brain empathizes. But in the end he can't retreat from the moral obligations of living in a pluralistic democracy...
7/and needs to recognize the primacy of the institutions that have birthed the west, and made his world possible. I think that's missing, and when he is at is worst, he is a very, very bad actor. I really believe he has created a kind of cult around himself.
8/So while I think he generally *means* well, his view of what that means compared to the views of nearly everyone else demand real scrutiny, and I think we've overlooked that. My hope is that he receives the full scrutiny he deserves and that democracy and its
9/institutions gain primacy and control over his plans, to serve as positive check and balance against his impulses. If that happens, things may work out okay, but if not, full capture may occur and things could get very dark. We need to guard against that.
10/Anyway, I think Musk is a complex character born mostly from his neurodivergence and the people who seek to use it to their advantage. We should respond accordingly. Stuff is complicated and we should seek to understand it deeply. (Photos are mine.)

Tip of the day: fight for cultural hegemony. Politics is for bottom feeders.

1/Putin will not stop until he is stopped. Ergo, he will do increasingly heinous things until the West is so disgusted it can’t help but respond, or be called complicit in atrocities. We are basically there now. Once that engagement begins to ramp up, domestic conflicts
2/in many countries (around traditionalism, currency, military/national identity, energy) will accelerate; “othering” and information war will start calcifying in-group/out-group divides that precede genocide. We will see precursors and beginnings of genocide in the West, and
3/in Russia. Where it goes from there is anyone’s guess. We CAN disrupt this, or at least expect it and try to steer away from it. But Putin is using the doctrine of Reflexive Control to use our outrage to guide our behavior, predictably and with increasing intensity/amplitude.

1/We are in a global war, World War 3. The war is over culture, currency, energy, and democracy vs. autocracy.

The autocrats want to eliminate democracy so that it doesn’t interfere with energy or impose taxes or regulation. The goal is unfettered anarchocapitalism.
2/The autocrats are in a fundamentalist belief system rooted in the idea that totally free markets fix everything.

The war will be fought through the genocide of anyone perceived to be an obstacle to anarchocapitalism, i.e. democracies everywhere — starting with Ukraine.
3/This war will not end there. Any democracy that exerts control over raw carbon energy interests is also a target. That includes Europe and the United States.

Culture is the tool for “othering” people as eventual targets for genocide. Politics and voting cannot counter culture.

1/You can’t fight a culture war with politics. Combat cultural assaults with cultural superiority: inclusion, justice, fairness, and beauty. Art, openness, and the overwhelming fact that these things are universal values, cherished by the majority. Make this our shared aesthetic.
2/The traditionalist assault waged by the red flag/swastika/Z people is being waged by the minority, very loudly, trying to give the impression they are the majority. They’re not. Not even close. That’s like 15% of people. Drown them out. Make the object appear the size it is.
3/The very worst thing we can do is let the cultural assaults go unanswered and try to fight it through politics alone in the summer and fall! It’s like bringing a spork to a nuke fight. We have to go upstream. Yesterday was a good example of the primacy of culture.

1/When things seem “crazy,” consider that you just don’t understand the strategy being pursued or the context in which it is being deployed.

From a warfare perspective, calling something “crazy” is a YOU deficit — not a “them” deficit.
2/To fix this, at least try to gain the information needed to make the “crazy” make sense from where the other side is operating from.

Only after making that effort should you conclude that something can be dismissed. More often than not there is logic behind their moves.
3/It may not be totally correct, and they may not succeed, but do not discard actionable useful intel and info about what they may do and, crucially, the damage they may cause in the process. That is what is overlooked all too often!

1/We need to stop being alternately amused/shocked at the specific terms and look at intent and effects.

The intent is to use traditionalism to “other” entire classes of people.

This is a precursor to genocide.
2/As Ukraine has descended into genocide, so will this activity if left uninterrupted.

When we see this pattern, we need to identify what cultural lever is being used and with what intent.

It might be traditionalism, economic worry (gas prices, inflation), or patriotism.
3/Protocols of the Elders of Zion and Steve Bannon both say you need three things to take a country: currency (gold/crypto vs. fiat), borders (xenophobia/nationalism/traditionalism) and military/national identity (patriotism).
