There is a lot in the proposed #CSP rules to be concerned about, but 3 new requirements stand out as particularly problematic:
1) A requirement for a community impact study that sets the expectation that charter schools should only exist to serve “extra” students who exceed district capacity. This subjugates families and students to the needs of the district, instead of empowering their own choices.
2) A #charterschool must demonstrate a plan for a diverse student & staff, regardless of its location/community preferences. This ignores our country’s housing segregation & dismisses the value of culturally affirming schools–including ones that serve indigenous populations.
3) Unilaterally requiring #charters to partner w/districts at the discretion of the district schools to cooperate. The new rules would mandate that charters partner with traditional public schools to receive priority points and funding in state competitions.
