#ChithiraiThiruvizha came to a closure in Madurai Meenakshi temple yesterday with ‘Theerthavari’. It also coincided with Azhagar entering the Vaigai river. Those who thought that people will be weaned away from the festivities due to 2 year pandemic gap, were seriously mistaken +
Dharmic Tamilians thronged the streets with double vigour. I was told by friends that the number of Thirukkans were almost doubled this year +
People from all ages from the surrounding villages came to Madurai and it was amazing to see the kids dressing like various Gods. Even some elders did this with enthusiasm +
It is clear that the current set back in this Dharmic land is only temporary & Dharma as usual will come out strongly as it did during a number of times, including the tyrannical times of Madurai Sultanate. It’s just a matter of time +
It also proved that this Thiruvizha is a festival of masses with the entire Madurai participating as if it is their own house function. Spare a thought for Tirumalai Savuri Naayinu Ayyalukaru Nayak who conceived this grand festival along with Agamic expert Neelakanta Dikshitar+
and thanks to all those who followed my posts very patiently and bearing with me for a number of posts. Hopefully many will now unmute me :) #ChithriThiruvizha2002

One of the (or the only) often (mis) quoted inscription by the Mughal / Sultanate apologists is the Hottur inscription. They use this odd inscription, attribute it to Rajendra Chola & say ‘hey Cholas also did such atrocities’. Is it true? Lets do a deep dive into the inscription.
Firstly, the inscription is NOT a direct Chalukya inscription. It is a Hero stone inscription of the Gavundas of Pottiyur, hailing one Gojjiga who perished in a war with robbers. The betel-traders of the village were praising the king in the inscription & incidentally mentioned
about Cholas. Note that the inscription says Nityavinodha Rajemdra Vidyadhara Nurmmadicholam”. The inscription was made in Saka 929, ie 1007 AD. That year Rajendra was not even crowned as Yuvaraja with that name. He took that Abhisheka name only in 1012.
While I am not into inter Sampradhaya / mutt fights, it was amusing to see someone saying ‘Sri Vidyaranya was not a Guru of Sringeri mutt’ & audaciously claiming that’s the True History, despite shown an evidence otherwise. So let’s get some details, the Nellore Inscription says
So it is clear that Sri Vidyaranya helped in the foundation of Vijayanagara empire & was the Guru of Sangama brothers.
In a copper plate grant of Harihara II, Sri Vidyaranya whose other name was Madhava was said to be the disciple of Sri Vidyatirthesa of Sringeri Mutt
In 1380, Harihara II makes a grant in Sringeri where he eloquently describes the qualities of the Guru Vidyaranya
A very important inscription was found recently near Tiruvannamalai. The 10th century inscription details out a grant given by Gandaratitya Chola. He was mentioned as ‘Sembiyan Mahadevi Thiruvayitril Uthitha’, born to Parantaka Chola & Sembiyan Mahadevi. More than that,
The grant was given to offer annadhana to 20 Kapalikas when the mid day pooja was performed in Tiruvannamalai. In addition, a village by name Vaichapoondi was donated to the Kapalikas. Their Gurus & disciples were given all the income generated from the village.
The grant was given by pouring water to Kapalam carried by the Kapalika saints. The inscription is significant as it adds to the handful of inscriptions mentioning Kapalikas in the country. It is also important to note that Cholas provided patronage to Maviratins like Kapalikas
Of the many mysteries surrounding the Big temple, the Varahi shrine inside the complex is an interesting one. Some say that it was part of the Saptamayrika shrines inside the complex & other shrines were destroyed later. But this seem to be an older shrine than the main temple and
It could be as old as 6th century. In 1975 there was an effort to build a Mandapam over the shrine. At the same time, the then CM wanted to install the statue of Rajaraja Chola inside. But the archeological department refused to this saying additional structures are not allowed
The peeved CM questioned why a Mandapam for Varahi was allowed then. So the central govt ordered for demolition of the Mandapam. On the very same day of the demolition, the state government was dismissed. Following this, emergency was imposed. In the next election even the party
