I sometimes discuss the importance of democracy with self-described "leftists", and why it's vital to #VoteBlue to prevent a fascist dictatorship.

This isn't universal (yet), but I'm increasingly hearing them say, "We don't have a democracy anyway. We have an oligarchy."

1/6
Their argument is, It's okay if fascists win, because democracy is already dead.

So why are you involved in politics at all? Why do you push for policies you say you want? If democracy is dead, the Voice of the People is irrelevant, and none of your words or acts matter.

2/6
More importantly, the conviction that "democracy is already dead" is a clarion call to inactivism. It is a declaration of defeat. These dead-enders are purposely supporting fascist autocracy by preemptively installing its software in their own minds.

3/6
Another part of this "we're already an oligarchy" schtick is, of course, the bothsidesism of how Democrats are "the same as" the fascists--which anyone who lived through Trump and has seen either Obama or Biden knows, for a fact, to be a lie.

4/6
Again, I stress, this give-it-all-up-ism is not (yet) universal among "leftists," but it is increasingly used to justify not-voting, or protest-voting (both of which are pro-fascism under another name).

It's impossible to argue these leftist inactivists out of their funk.

5/6
Try not to let them tie up your time or absorb your energy. We have important work to do, and we sure don't need anyone who isn't going to vote anyway.

Hold the House. Secure the Senate. Turn state legislatures Blue. Work your ass off. Save democracy. Be a goddam hero.

6/6
On the idiocy of protest voting, read the brilliant post linked in this tweet.

Screams for ending student loans (even though there've been no payment for 2 years) is the new "But Her Emails!"--a propaganda campaign aimed to convince the weak-minded to not vote for Biden's reelection. This is blatant now: "He Broke Promises!!" though he didn't promise this.
Every time you point out the President can't do it by Divine Command, every time you mention that cancelling loans has to be funded, every time you mention the $15 billion that've been cancelled under existing programs, the response is, "That's why you're going to LOSE in 2022!"
The whole point is to encourage people to not vote.

That.
Is.
The.
Whole.
Point.

It's a coordinated campaign to convince people who aren't paying attention (mostly rich white kids) that their unicorn steaks are more important the saving the goddam world from fascism.

I've gotten into discussions, on Twitter and off, regarding student loans. Let be be clear: I don't oppose cancelling student loans. I don't support it either.

There is no proposal anywhere to cancel student loans, so there isn't yet anything to support or oppose.

1/10
To be accurate: there are existing programs that allow the Secretary of Education to cancel selected student loans, usually in cases of extreme hardship or predatory lenders. The Biden Administration has already cancelled $15 billion in student loans under those programs.

2/10
I absolutely support those programs, and I want them to continue, and I want more loans cancelled under them, as funding permits.

To go beyond those programs would require an act of Congress, and no one has yet (to my knowledge) written a single proposal.

I'm tired of fauxgressives declaring, "You need us, or you'll lose the next elections! So bow to our demands!"

Really? Like YOU don't need Democrats to accomplish any of the things you claim to want? No, biatch, you play by OUR rules, or you get total nothing.

1/7
Look, in truth, no one counts on your vote. You stay home and hold your breath whenever you feel like it. We're reaching beyond you to the millions who are just realizing the dangers of not voting for Democrats.

You're not going to help yourself by throwing a tantrum.

2/7
Suppose you got everything you say you want--what reason would you vote at all after that? You've already got everything you want. Getting high in mom's basement is better than standing in line to save democracy, right?

See, we know you're not willing to save democracy now.

SCOTUS is expected to weaken or even reverse Roe v Wade this summer. About half of the states have laws ready to trigger immediately, making abortion a felony. By the November election, we will have news stories of (poor) women dying in illegal back-alley abortions.

1/5
By November, there will be people in prison for assisting women who travel to blue states where abortion is still legal. There will be stories of rich Republicans who jet to California for abortions. There'll be doctors charged with felonies for performing safe abortions.

2/5
Republican rhetoric will be that the people in prison, and the women who die, deserved it.

There will be fake-leftist trolls condemning Democrats for not having stopped it.

Let's start a call NOW for a Constitutional Amendment protecting the legal right to abortion.

Every now and then, I see people pushing the idea of a Universal Basic Income, or UBI. Let's put that idea in its grave, shall we?

The usual form of the idea, which sounds pretty good on its surface, is to pay every America (for example) $2,000 per months. Wow! Great!

1/21
In the most simple version, you get this money from the day you're born until the day you die. Presumably, it's adjusted for inflation, and increases over time, but we'll ignore that detail for simplicity.

2/21
The idea is to cover your basic living expenses, help raise children, see you through tough times when you can't find a job, help pay for education and healthcare, and so on. Everyone gets it, because we're all humans, and basic living is a human right.

As recently as 2008, pundidiots thought Democrats had a mortal lock on the Senate, a structural advantage that couldn't be overcome in a generation, if ever. then in 2014, Republicans took over the Senate.

Those same pundidiots were shocked in 2018 when Dems took the House.

1/3
In 2019 and 2019, they were certain Trump would be reelected. And that Democrats couldn't possibly take the Senate in 2020.

My point is, don't listen to pundidiots.

They're telling you now Republicans will take the House =and= the Senate this fall.

2/3
We can win =everything= in 2022, and again in 2024.

When Democrats vote, we win.

When Democrats vote, America wins.

When Democrats vote, the world wins.

Get out there and do it. Be a goddam hero.
