2 months ago, #ChristinaYunaLee's death rocked me. my group chats filled with tips on buying mace & coupons for personal alarms. but i knew my sisters deserved more. so i set out to explore the military, cultural, psychosocial history of this violence—& what justice might mean 🧵
i learned from historian Paul Kramer on the origins & legacy of military-sexual imperialism (American, British, more) & how state-sanctioned violence against women in Asia was justified as a matter of military necessity. the impacts are alive & well today.

i reflected with filmmaker & cultural scholar @CelineShimizu on how tropes of Asian women—servile, submissive, suffering, and thus uniquely “sexy"—have been recycled for over a century. this very specific type of violence now permeates our cultural waters.

with forensic psychiatrist Elizabeth Ford, i deconstructed officials arguments blaming these murders on mental illness. treating perpetrators as aberrations is a convenient way to shirk culpability, where in fact our state & media are responsible for conditioning & goading them.
i explored where we go from here with public defender @CriticalRace, on learning from history in pursuit of true justice: "Justice is more than just prosecution & jails. Justice is transforming our systems & conditions so we can stop violence altogether." thenation.com/article/societ…
deeply grateful to @Mlsif for believing in this story; @ddguttenplan for championing it ✨; @alonglastname for a cover image showing us defiant & resilient despite it all; Zoya Qureshi & Najwa Jamal who graciously & meticulously fact-checked it, incl watching v difficult videos.
so much love @MeihongLum & @RedCanarySong for creating spaces to mourn; @takeshiwan for making the connection; @triciawang @krmaher (from Thailand) @troelsheiredal @georgiafrancesk for caring for me—this was so hard to research & write; i was lucky to be held & supported thru it.
if like me, you've been heartbroken by convos post #AtlantaSpaShooting; devastated by recent attacks; and yearning for more for our people—more understanding, more space, more safety, more care, more justice, more love—i hope this can offer you something:

"1 in 4 women in the US will experience severe domestic abuse in their lifetime.

the #1 reason they stay in the relationship: they can't afford to leave.

the impacts of that abuse will cost a female survivor $103k on average." @PassiSonya of @freefromorg
this talk resonated so much. thrilled @freefromorg got a #EqualityCantWait grant to scale their groundbreaking work!

there’s shame/pain in talking about what i went thru, but i'll say one thing with 100% certainty: we need more support for survivors healing from financial abuse.
my story: after years of trying, i finally broke free of a dark situation.

the impetus: out of the blue, a friend who knew wrote me a check for $10k: "treat it as a loan. but don't let $/logistics be the reason you stay.”

i never cashed the check. but i realized he was right.

I gotta say, while there were many gems in the #NewPublicFestival session on online safety, watching the convo dynamics was v uncomfortable, even triggering. Without meaning to, it illustrated why moderating just “for safety” is not enough.

That said, some points that stood out:
On being asked to choose b/w "creative tension" of online spaces optimizing for inclusive presence vs for courageous engagement, @natematias notes research shows without spaces where folks feel truly welcome, they cannot engage courageously. (So we all lose.) #NewPublicFestival
.@Anasuyashh made many excellent points (+ much needed rebuttals) but I'm most grateful for her reminder that our modern day digital public squares are built on slave labour. Content farms are exploitative and dehumanizing, with profits to Western corporations. #NewPublicFestival

I have 5 invites in my inbox to "co-create the future”.

I’ve architected, negotiated, led a lot of co-creation work. True co-creation. With stakeholders from diverse backgrounds (regionally, economically, politically, culturally) + some that hate each other.

What I've learned:
Co-creation is not throwing a bunch of people into a space / process / initiative and expecting magic to happen.

That’s wishful thinking—and usually comes from a place of privileged myopia.
Co-creation is not gathering ideas from a bunch of people, then figuring out what you do with them later.

That’s a consultation. One that is at best poorly planned, and at worst highly insulting.

Gives me chills to read this from a state recovery plan:

"The road to economic recovery should not be across women’s backs..."

[thread]
“Economy” comes from Greek, meaning to “manage the household".

Women in our communities have never been busier taking care of loved ones, provisioning supplies, finding ways to offset the enormous economic and social burdens of this time."
"These aspects of the economy usually go uncounted + hidden yet there would be no economy without them.

The cheap value of caregiving is not natural; it has political origins. Caregiving, associated with / expected of women, is necessary for economic production to take place..."
