renowned international relations scholar John Mearsheimer talks about how the agency of Ukrainians is undermined by the US, which will happily fight to the last Ukrainian to prevent any resolution that even gives the hint of Russia having obtained some of its objectives
John Mearsheimer famously predicted what is happening now in a 2015 lecture, saying ominously that "Ukraine is going to get wrecked" if the policies of the US and NATO would continue, which it did. See this thread for clips of that lecture:
israel just bombed gaza with american and western supplied and funded jets and bombs, as it does routinely. meanwhile the western media and political class is crying hysterically about russian bombing in ukraine and pretending like they oppose it on principle
another crucial difference between the two is that if you try to donate to gaza's resistance, or even worse call on or attempt to send them any weapons, you will end up in jail as a terrorist. do it for azov nazis and you'll get a slot on CNN calling you a brave hero
just to give you one example of how depraved the western media class truly is, see what happened when tony benn brought up a humanitarian charity for gaza on the BBC. imagine russia blocking segments calling for humanitarian donations to ukraine
if you're angry over chomsky saying only a diplomatic solution will put an end to the war and save the lives of countless ukrainians don't worry: the western media and political class has already decided that they will fight to the last ukrainian. you'll get your wish, brave hero
when ukraine has been turned into another syria or libya in a year or so, you'll never talk about it again. you'll take down the flag from your bio and name and go bravely virtue signal online about whatever ruling elites tell you is the Most Important Thing now
I should add that zelensky has called on people to join their fight. if you actually care instead of just posing as a brave hero online you'd go. but of course when you're a international politics professor at cornell or whatever the fuck that's not what you're in it for
there is actually an alternative to twitter and other social media being owned by deranged billionaires like elon musk or some saudi prince: taking them away from corporate control and democratizing them. here's yanis varoufakis proposing a practical step to take towards that:
yanis is right that it's unique in history that the value of these corporations is provided by people voluntarily giving their free time to use them. without this they wouldn't exist. it's only natural that they are controlled democratically and collectively rather than privately
there is also of course the fact that without massive public investment these big tech corporations, now some of the wealthiest in the world, wouldn't even exist in the first place:
when you see the french first round election result come in later today w/ a likely macron/le pen second round, remember that soc-dems and greens could have easily voted for the leftist melenchon to prevent the fascist le pen from going through. but they much prefer that match-up
the green and soc-dem candidates spent the last few weeks focusing on smearing melenchon while he was in third place and came close to overtaking le pen. strangely, just as w/ corbyn, the "lesser evil" argument fell away. strangely, they're totally fine w/ a fascist winning
there was a good piece on why it would be best if melenchon proceeded to the second round, as it would mean actual issues of economy were discussed instead of a race between who can be more racist and islamophobic. but naturally french soc-dems/greens pulled a neera tanden/libdem
the energy bill increases in the UK over the past 8 months have been insane. our bill more than tripled over last year, and we had to cut back on many basic expenses to be able to cover for it. it is driving millions into poverty, having to choose between staying warm or eating
it started to become warm a week or so back and we finally thought we'd get some relief, but then it started to get cold again a few days ago. we've been wearing layers upon layers of clothes in-doors just to avoid having to turn on the heating as it's impossible to afford it
millions of people's lives have been destroyed by this already and it's only going to get worse. these are the perpetual victims of a depraved neoliberal capitalist system that get no attention, aren't counted as victims of it bc they have no power and it's deemed "normal"
can someone from france please explain to me the point of running as a communist party/leftist candidate and only getting 3/4% of the vote, thereby ensuring that the leftist candidate melenchon won't get to the second round but instead it'll be between le pen and macron?
in the last election the exact same thing happened. the leftist candidates arthaud and poutou (you don't even have to add hamon, who is more center-left) took away just enough from melenchon to ensure a macron-le pen second round. what is the point of this?
I think a reasonable way to proceed is for all the socialist/communist parties to put forward their candidates, then look at which one is the highest in the polls a month or two before the election, then rally around them to help ensure a second round. maybe that's too idealistic
