Continuing my look back at NIN's #YearZero for its 15th anniversary with one of my favorite music photo shoots I've ever done, 2007 promotional photos of Trent Reznor for the album. 🧵 1/
We wanted an aesthetic that felt like it put TR into the dystopian world and vibe of Year Zero, so I used a long “paparazz” lens and shot him from a distance, to give a paranoid feeling of being surveilled. 2/
For this shoot we just took an afternoon off from rehearsals and drove around an empty industrial part of London, just Trent and a stylist and me, no lighting or crew or anything, and stopped to take shots at any interesting backdrops we spotted, using only natural light. 3/
Sometimes the right idea, the right setting, and a camera are all you need for a light, fast, creative shoot with great results - my favorite kind. 4/
One more shot, of Trent walking past a billboard in London, one of two huge in-world #YearZero street art pieces (the other in Los Angels) that appeared during the ARG, and contained clues for the game. Artwork by 42 Entertainment's art team. Full size: nin.wiki/images/7/75/Lo… 5/
The great Johnny Rodriguez, 42’s VP of Visual Design, and his team, with art direction input from Alex/TR/me, was responsible for a lot of the street art/resistance aesthetics in the ARG, including the murals and the AIR flag logo & gun/cross logo: 42entertainment.com/team/johnny 6/
I'm very excited about our new jigsaw puzzles, so here's a thread highlighting some of my favorite puzzles I've designed, some for your enjoyment and also some for your masochistic suffering. 1/
Glitch art jigsaw puzzles! These are unique abstract challenges for pro puzzlers in a few different styles: analog VHS/CRT glitches, Betamax glitches, and digital data corruption. 2/
Our puzzles currently go up to 500 pieces, but I know some of you want a bigger challenge, so I've created a special double puzzle of analog VHS/CRT glitch noise. Two 500 piece puzzles that fit together for a 32" x 20" challenge. Get both, mix up the pieces, and... good luck! 3/
I’ve been dreading the ugly plastic convoluted clutter of accessories that seem to fill your world when you have a baby, but credit to @Steph_Sheridan_ for seeking out cool stuff that doesn’t look too suburban (but is still functional & reasonably priced) 🖤
Teaser trailer for my second @nineinchnails concert film, BESIDE YOU IN TIME, released 15 years ago #OnThisDay in 2007. An early entry in the new frontier of HD home video, it was the first live music feature released simultaneously on DVD, Blu-ray, and the ill-fated HD-DVD. 1/
My cover art for NIN's BESIDE YOU IN TIME concert film, released 15 years ago today. This marked the end of NIN's "With Teeth" era and the visual style I created for it; by the time this release hit we had already begun the #YearZero campaign. 2/
For the DVD version we could use a sleek cardboard package, but for the new Blu-ray & HD-DVD formats we had to use the standard ugly plastic clamshells. I was so bothered by how the blu-ray blue clashed with our red cover, I proposed a blue alt cover for it (label said no). 3/
There is no hardware more threatening than printers. A whole ass Chaotic Evil device category that society has universally loathed for decades. An ugly, angry presence in your home or office, a cursed appliance that isn't afraid to let you know it hates itself and it hates you.
We got a new generic printer for basic office shit, and it's still sitting in the box because no one wants to be the one to engage in battle with it. It's just sitting in the office emanating bad vibes, a looming chore that bums you out when you pass by and remember it exists.
Just look at the fucking box; it makes your hairs stand on end just *seeing* a box like this, triggered by a lifetime of printer trauma. Everything about it is mad that it exists. No other class of device triggers a fight-or-flight response merely from the packaging.
15 years ago today, the @nineinchnails#YearZero ARG experience I co-created w/Trent Reznor & 42 Entertainment kicked off with a message hidden in a tour t-shirt and a USB stick discovered in a bathroom stall at a NIN concert in Portugal. 1/
For months, fans around the world discovered our Year Zero mythology through a complex interactive community experience that was one of the most exciting projects I’ve ever worked on, and meant so much to fans who participated that people still bring it up to me regularly. 2/
Two years ago today my debut graphic novel HIGH LEVEL (co-created with artist Barnaby Bagenda) was released! It's a project very close to my heart, so today I'm celebrating with a FREE comic+music sample pack download to get the book out to more people! A THREAD: 1/
Contains a hi-res PDF of the full first two issues of @highlevelcomic plus MP3s of the first 14 tracks of our killer original soundtrack. 100% free/direct, no signup/DRM.
Please RT! 2/
For those of you who read High Level book 1 and keep asking "what's next?" here's where it's at: Our label Vertigo was sadly shut down (thanks AT&T) before the book was even published. But I can't get the rights back yet because Warner Bros is holding it for TV/movie options. 3/
