Wow I am overwhelmed by the amount of thoughts and emotions I have after watching @edyong209's talk at #Lind22, and I don't think I could express any of them as eloquently as Ed can. So grateful for your time tonight.
A few likely incoherent takeaways:
- #ScienceJournalism now, and especially during the pandemic, interplay of science and everything else
- Science journalism is not telling people what is happening, but helping them *make sense* of what is happening
- Science isn't just question ➡️ answer, nor a series of facts; it exists in a social framework because it exists within society
- People perhaps know more science facts now, like mRNA, but does not mean you know science as a *process*
- Deficit model for #SciComm does not work; people learn about science not as an empty vessel but within their lives and within society; "anti-science" perspective has so many more layers than just being backlash
- Understand those not vaccinated within their life context; approach with empathy and compassion
- Expertise is deep and narrow; experts in one subject, by definition, cannot be experts in another
- Swiss cheese model should have been used; not entire reliance on vaccines, and not on individualism
- Pandemic failures are systemic
And perhaps my favourite moment of tonight:
Beyond storytelling, "make things beautiful; if the writing sings, people will be more likely to read it". Even when writing difficult content, make experience as pleasant as possible for readers.
