Good discussion.
I’ve invested in different types of #credit/lending startups.
Credit is VERY hard but looks ‘easy.’
But I’ve asserted for years that it’s bigger (& more lucrative) than payments. Yet hugely underserved.
That may be a reason for the interest.
Access to cheap debt?
That’s just one variable in the credit equation.
No-file/thin-file credit histories reaffirm but complicate the opportunity.
Ability to pay & willingness to pay are not coterminous.
Consequences of default aren’t well understood across geos.
Better sightline infra is still a WIP.
Underwriting at scale is much harder than it looks. Truly automating this is holy grailish. Many startups are doing this w/ vibes, winks & inshallah. Excel gymnastics won’t save them.

There is a huge gap in the timing AND breadth of products offered vs those demanded or needed.
Automating both of the above is a gigantic opportunity.

Default & Collections management is a whole different playbook. Surprised more startups haven’t truly tackled this.

Anyway, shout out to @aehartz123 for writing a superb post that was so spot-on re my thesis I got skurred.

Ok, rant time.

This culture of putting our founders on pedestals when they haven’t earned a right, if any, to be there must stop.

Too many people aka gatekeepers are talking about protecting a 'fragile ecosystem' 1/18
while turning a blind eye to corrosive behavior. That includes insidery deals, self dealing, side shows, bullying, sexual harassment, etc.

Using metaphors to frame the problem as ‘spank, don’t kill, the child’ when you are looking at adults that have agency is ludicrous. /2
Making up stories about folks that point out the emperor has no clothes may be instinctively defensive but it shows how limited your focal length is.

Investors also have a serious part to play. Yes, it's about generating returns but showing wilful blindness, in a fragile /3

The price of entry & maintenance.

A thread.

As we hear about the data that supports the contention that there has been systemic marginalization of Black founders & investors, it struck me that the few of us that have paid visible & invisible dues while constantly dealing
with the macro & micro humiliations that come with being Black (Fitz phototype VI, in particular) in the quest for an investing track record have shared their inside stories about the price of entry AND the price to stay in the game. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
It’s important that those who are looking to go down the founder or investor track be clear about the potential trades you will have to make.
Not unusual, whatever your skin color, as life is a series of trades, but being Black means it comes with a greater propensity to bear the
