the American West. The Black soldiers, many of them freed slaves, adopted the same racist tropes as their fellow white soldiers with regard to Natives.
We must confront our history unflinchingly in order to shape our future.
Lynching wasn't just a southern tradition. June 12, 1920 a pair of white teens in Duluth, Minnesota, lied about being robbed and sexually assaulted. Police jailed six men without evidence. That night, 10,000 men stormed the jail, and three of...
Black men were lynched. Photographs of the lynching were taken printed on post cards.
Today in Duluth, there is a memorial to Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie at the scene of their murder. ...

Critical Race Theory Lesson #20
Japanese Internment
Two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which resulted in the immediate arrest and concentration camp incarceration of 122,000 Japanese Americans. There was no evidence...
that Japanese Americans were unpatriotic or collaborating with forces belligerent to the United States. Their incarceration continued until December of 1944, when they were each given $25 and a bus or train ticket back to the city where they were arrested.
They lost everything; homes, businesses, and academic progress. They also returned to racism, bigotry, and in many cases, physical assault. They found it difficult to find employment and suffered great financial hardship.
In 1992, the US government made direct reparations of $20,000 to survivors of the unconstitutional arrest and incarceration during World War II. #ncpol #CriticalRaceTheory
Critical Race Theory Lesson #21:
Thomas Jefferson was a rapist.
Sally Hemings was Thomas Jefferson's slave. She was called his "mistress." When you are a mistress you can consent to sex. A slave cannot. She had no choice. #CriticalRaceTheory#ncpol
Critical Race Theory Lesson #22:
Navajo Code Talkers
In 1942, the Department of War needed a code that was unbreakable by the Japanese. A Christian missionary who grew up on the Navajo Nation saw yet another opportunity to exploit Natives. Some 420 Navajo men were ... #ncpol

When the war ended, they returned to the reservation, and again experienced the bigotry and economic privation they had known before. #ncpol
Today, their children and grandchildren remain economically disadvantaged and overlooked by both state and federal governments. Many homes on the Navajo Nation are heated with firewood (there is no more coal), ... #ncpol
and years of mineral exploitation has left many communities with clusters of cancers and respiratory disease.
Thanking the Code Talkers and ignoring their progeny is the most plastic expression of patriotism.
We cannot allow elected Republicans to use critical race theory as a dividing wedge between our communities. Or allow this white wash to continue into the 21st century.

Tuskegee Syphilis Study
Between 1932 and 1972, The United States Public Health Service conducted an experiment on untreated syphilis on more than 600 Black Alabama sharecroppers. #ncpol
PHS told them they would receive healthcare, but none was actually provided. There are no reports any racial group other than Black men were selected.
At least 120 of the subjects died. At least 40 wives were infected, and ... #ncpol
9 children were in born infected with congenital syphilis. In 1997, President Bill Clinton apologized, but no damages or reparations have ever been paid. Dr. Raymond A. Vonderlehr lead the experiment with Dr. Robert John Heller Jr. Neither was ever held accountable. #ncpol
The legacy today is a deep seated mistrust by Blacks in mainstream medicine. COVID-19 vaccination rates in the Black community lag behind all other groups as a result. #CriticalRaceTheory #TuskegeeExperiment #ncpol
