Did a lot of people forget after an earthquake in Haiti, a Nice White Church Lady from the US was stopped at the border into the Dominican Republic with a bus full of kids and claimed she'd been given permission to just take X many children to put up for international adoption?
Not specific kids. Not even specifically orphans. She made up a license that let her go pick up displaced/evacuated kids (I think she had close to three dozen of them) from Haiti and take them to found an "orphanage" in the DR for international adoption (trafficking).
Here's an article about it.

Quote: "Silsby and her supporters say they just wanted to save youngsters from the chaos, disease and uncertainty of quake-ravaged Haiti."

White Saviorism isn't bad just because it's arrogant or rude. It's actively evil.

In my twenties, I knew absolutely nothing about adoption that you can't learn from TV shows and movies like Annie or various adaptations of Oliver Twist, where it's basically a fairy tale plot device without any magic wand required.

And I knew that stuff was Hollywood stuff.
But whenever I encountered someone online of an anti-adoption bent, I fell back on what I now recognize are easy and thoughtless cliches: but isn't it better for a kid to have a home and family than not? Who could be against giving a child a home?
In retrospect, there's a very clear and obvious pattern where everybody I so magnanimously dispensed these platitudes upon had themselves been adoptees, where I couldn't think if I knew anybody, at that time, who had been adopted.
Now, I know multiple people who are grown-up adoptees. They think and feel different things about their experiences and about the practice itself, which makes sense as they are all different people.
A lot of people are up in arms today because Ana Mardoll, whom some segments of the twitternet seem to never tire of trying to make into a Main Character, merely said that adoption is not an option for him and wished that people would stop recommending it.
And there's more than one thing at play here, some of it being preexisting animosity towards one person and some of it being white saviorism and some of it being that same mixture of arrogance and ignorance I had on the subject when I wore a younger me's clothes.
But it's leading a lot of people to make big, bold, huge, sweeping statements in support of adoption as a simple, straightforward, universal, unvarnished, unadulterated, and absolute good... just because the wrong person seemed to say something against it... and it's really not.
Were you mad when you heard that the DHS under Trump had up and "lost" a bunch of other people's kids?

The same white supremacist Christian dominionist circles that the Haitian child-snatcher I linked to above had similar plans for those kids.
And those plans fuel a huge, huge, huuuuuuuge amount of international child trafficking, under the guise of adoption services. Of kids who aren't orphans, whose parents are often lied to, coerced, or simply not given a choice.
And kids who are orphans, for that matter. There's not an asterisk in the list of universal human rights that says You Must Have This Many Parents To Not Be For Sale.
Anyway. For more on this topic, I suggest you listen to #AdopteeVoices, some of whom have conveniently tagged their hashes thusly.

And if you're stuck on "But surely giving a child a home must be a good thing. Only a monster would imply otherwise!"... you should learn more.
Oh, and before this thread finds So Now They're Canceling... Twitter, let me make it clear: random trans people don't have the power to "cancel" the adoption industry and I'm not arguing for its abolition.

I'm telling you nuance-averse pickle chips that it's complicated.

I think part of why this scene hit Jimmy so hard is that he understood in some way he was looking at two possible futures (the Kettlemans' star spangled scam with a plan, and the ruthlessness of Slippin' Kimmy) and was horrified by both of them.
Betsy caught onto Jimy's plan, eventually, because she is spiteful enough that when she realized he had wasted their time, she assumed it was deliberate, and she had an answer when she asked herself why that would be, because she knows what it would have been for her.
He can try to say that he's nothing like her, but his heart soared a bit when he saw their sad, hokey little set-up, with Lady Liberty any justice for all. Praise the Lord, and pass the tax rebate.

She had his number, because it's also her number.

We begged our parents to take us to the theater where we watched a favorite toy die on screen in Orson Welles's last movie, as part of a marketing campaign that backfired so spectacularly another toy snuff film was reworked into a TV special where a beloved toy fell into a coma.
And Eric Idle plays a functionally indestructible motorcycle man made out of TV commercials and garbage in the part of the movie that is a music video for the song.

I have commandeered a tanker containing 1.7 TRILLION gallons of crude respect. Unless the demands of the Trans Lobby are met I will scuttle it in the Caspian Sea. Are you familiar with Paramysis baeri, a species of shrimp-like crustacean? You will learn to obey us, or respect it.
Sometimes comedy is sharpened by the constraints of the medium. As that tweet evolved, I had to change "unadulterated liquid respect" to "pure liquid respect" to "unrefined respect" to "refined respect", before finally settling on "crude respect", which is obviously the funniest.
"But none of those mean the same thing." The meaning doesn't actually matter; it's the juxtaposition created when a descriptor that might go with something transported in a tanker being applied to something that definitely isn't.

Openly weeping at the beautiful con Jimmy works on the Kettlemans in S6E2.
I really admire the way the writers laid the groundwork in the domestic scene with Kim Wexler so that they don't have to explain what Jimmy is doing with the Kettlemans or why.
Also, while I'm obviously not going to root against Gustavo Fring, I can't help rooting for Lalo, which kind of makes this show an opposite of Breaking Bad in an important way. The people I care about are the people the story cares about.

I have my answer to this but I'm curious what other people think.

Note that I'm not interested in prescriptive arguments and I feel like you're trying to debate/instruct me in a reply I may block you.

Do you think "captain" rhymes with "again"?
In my central plains US English accent, it's basically a perfect rhyme, like capt'n and ag'n. Putting a distinct vowel sound in where the apostrophes go makes me sound like I'm 1) putting on a vague but overbroad accent and 2) morally offended at what the cap-TIN is doing a-GEN.
Also, without wishing (for once) to start any intra-Anglosphere wankery... I am surprised to learn how many people in the UK regard "-in" and "-en" as being a hard nope for rhyming rather than an easy stretch. I know they sound different to you. But unbridgeably different?

*sigh*

Look, I know it's called a motte-and-bailey argument.

But that's not actually a useful term for explaining what's going on unless your audience happens to be familiar with both mottes and also baileys.

I also disagree with the framing of the metaphor.
The only reason to tell another person that it's called a motte-and-bailey is if you're proud of knowing the phrase and you want them to know about it. It's not helpful. It's not productive. In and of itself, it tells nothing new to anybody.
And it's not a good metaphor.

First of all, a motte-and-bailey castle is an entrenched position. The force holding it is on the defensive. They might represent an expansionist power (an m&b can be constructed quickly) but they are personally pinned down, under siege.
