I have slept, de-stressed and re-hydrated.

And I'm back on twitter for some deep reflection on the #MBAPGC22 conference @thembauk @LJMU

Incl
1) A summary of the first hybrid MBA conference
2) Best moments
3) How we organised it
4) My advice for future committees
Summary 1/4
Apart from a few technical hitches on day 1, talks and online talks ran smoothly.
It wasn't the streaming tech that I had wanted to use and it probably would have done better with some sound and visual upgrades. But it was a good start for the first hybrid.
Summary 2/4
All talks and posters were of VERY high quality, incredible seeing that this was the first conference for many of the Masters + PhD students that attended. 👏
We had a great international presence in-person and online incl Portugal, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Taiwan
Summary 3/4
The Keynotes by @ilariacoscia, @BD_Stew @rui_vieira19, @griffiths_huw @sunfishresearch @MissLogOps @AndyRidgway1 Arianna Liconti were all amazing.
Each with their own interesting and inspirational stories, advice and research.
Summary 4/4
Liverpool treated us well.
On top of the brilliant networking atmosphere that was brought by each attendee, the sunny skies, warm (for the UK!) weather and beautiful sunsets helped create such a wonderful and friendly atmosphere.
Best moments 1/4

It's the first day of the conference, there are a multiple lab groups and no-one really knows anyone else.

But by the end of the reception event EVERYONE knew everyone. 40~ attendees + Keynotes mingling, pub quizzing, chatting science and life. Amazing.
Best moments 2/4
Gala dinner @hopestreethtl, organised by @avcunnington1 and @CourtneyrMay.
Perfect venue, perfect weather, perfect group of academics!
Not much more I can say. If you are interested in what happened, I suggest searching #MBAPGC22 and you will 👀what I mean
Best moments 3/4
QUESTIONS
As a committee chair normally I have to generate questions to ask the speakers just in-case. Normally one would have to start the questions at least a few times.
Not ONCE.
Everyone had a few questions and were enthusiastic about everyone's projects
Best Moments 3.5/4
Humble and easy to approach Keynotes
I think for this I must disclose that I already knew what we were getting with @ilariacoscia and @rui_vieira19 but I was in awe with each of the keynotes.
Not only have they all done amazing work and had great experiences
Best Moments 4/4

The keynotes were all interested in us. They all wanted to talk and help each attendee and wanted to give as much time to each attendee as possible.
I, and I'm sure many other attendees, will always be thankful for the time, effort and advice you all gave.
How we organised it 1/4

We approached @thembauk after seeing their call in an email to MBA members.
After a few discussions we were given the go-ahead.

Then we needed to get @LJMU onboard.
Not as easy as it sounds, but
How we organised it 2/4

Thankfully @LJMU had some key staff members that helped us through each step incl.
Claire Keenan, Jason Kirby, Dawn Fantin, Jenn Donnely, Zoe Miveld and Kerry Bailey.

Without them we would still be lost in the sea of paperwork.
How we organised it 3/4

The committee.
I am the tech guy- I set up the website and I know some basic things about streaming.
@DrDowdall @avcunnington1 @erika_neave @CourtneyrMay Stamatia @stefanako71 did everything else!
How we organised it 4/4
The enthusiasm, commitment, ideas and good-old fashioned determination that each member brought to the table was astounding. Not to mention keeping me alive will I was writing chapters of my thesis.
Without them I, and the conference, would be lost at sea
Future advise 1/6

Dear the future committee,

Ask your department for more committee members! If I didn't do this I wouldn't have met and become great friends with @DrDowdall and Stamatia. We also would have been encumbered with work and stress and it would have been a mess.
Future advise 2/6

Make as many University departments as you can aware of your conference.
Sometimes information doesn't flow fast in universities so make sure you let every department that is useful to you know. This way you can make sure you can get all the help you need fast
Future advise 3/6

If you are doing a hybrid conference ASK the uni's media team/ students to see if anyone needs a project for their portfolio and/or would like to help with the equipment and/or give advise.
Future advise 4/6

Make sure you nail down the payment system your university uses ASAP. Do you need a post-doc to approve transactions? Do you need to have an invoice than includes VAT? Do you have a university procurement card that you can utilize for last min purchases?
Future advise 5/6

Get your theme sorted and advertise as early as possible.
Sadly there were a few students that will always miss the deadline or miss the adverts but the early you get this sorted the more likely you will get a more inclusive and widespread audience.
Future advise 6/6
Be inclusive in your search for keynotes, look for diverse research fields, diverse backgrounds and diff stages of career. This will make sure that you are able to get what we got. Each Keynote with their own unique take, adding something extra each talk.
Last but not least a big thanks to all of our sponsors @GenSocUK @PCR_Biosystems @MSCecolabel @thembauk and @LJMU, without your support our conference would have been waaay more expensive and not as amazing. #TurnOfTheTide #MBAPGC22
