The best lifting shoes on the planet Nike doesn't want you to know about

THREAD
When you were a child the widest part of your foot structure was your toes.

But what do traditional running shoes do to our toes? They keep them boxed in.

Strength come from the feet first & if you're not able to spread your toes you become weaker by nature.
Wearing narrow shoes while lifting can lead to problems with your feet such as...

-Bunions
-Hammer toes
-Plantar fasciitis
-Foot stability problems

Not having proper toe spread leads to less stability in the foot, which causes a toxic chain reaction of weakness up your body.
Why should your toes spread out?

Try this test:

Do 10 reps of a barefoot squat while bunching your toes together.

Then do another 10 reps with your toes spread out.

If you do this right you'll feel more stability with your toes spread out.

@SquatUniversity Are you wearing the right lifting shoes?

Do this test:

Take out the insole of your lifting shoe. Put it on the ground & place your foot on it.

Are you able to spread your toes or do they box your toes in?

If your toes cannot spread out you may be wearing the wrong shoes.
@SquatUniversity Here's a picture of the insole of a Nike running shoe.

If you look closely you can see that it contains the toes.

But..

If you look even closer you'll see that the toes are fixed in position meaning they can't spread.

They’re boxed in.
@SquatUniversity So what shoes should you wear?

You want shoes that have a wide toe box & allow for your toes to spread naturally.

One of the best shoes I've found for this is barefoot minimalist shoes.
@SquatUniversity An example of this would be the Vivo Barefoot shoes.

Lifting in a shoe like this is better for the foot & overall stability.

It's flexible, has a wider toe box & a minimal sole so your foot can function as it was designed to do.
@SquatUniversity What about toe shoes?

Toe shoes are better than running shoes but if you look at the the way they're designed the toes are kept in a fixed position.

We want toe spread as well as the freedom for our toes to move.

5 finger shoes allow for toe spread but not for toe freedom.
@SquatUniversity So what shoes are you wearing when you go lifting?

If you've got small narrow feet that can toe spread in Nike shoes then go right on ahead.

But..

If you're have normal feet you'd be better off lifting in a shoe that allows for more toe spread for maximum strength & stability.
@SquatUniversity That's a wrap!

10 pieces of life advice I'd give myself at 21 years old

I've made a lot of mistakes in life.

At 21 I was overweight, broke, in debt, purposeless & going nowhere.

If I could slap my past younger self into a better path this is what I'd say 👇
1. You are what you've been programmed to be.

My teachers, friends & some family members told me I was dumb, fat & wouldn't amount to nothing.

And I believed them.

My life changed when I decided to take control of my own programming & get away negative forces.
2. For the new you to live the old you must die.

Growth means shedding the skin of who you were for the person you're meant to be.

That means new visions, new values & new ways of thinking.

You can't take the old you along for the ride. He must go for you the new you to live.

7 harsh truths about weight loss no one tells you about:
Harsh truth: Losing weight is the easy part. Keeping it off is hard.

The first step is losing the weight. The 2nd step is keeping it off.

And keeping it off is as hard as losing it.

Successful weight loss is not about how much you lose. It's about how much you keep off.
Harsh truth: You must change as a person.

You can't expect to be the same person you were before the losing the weight.

Beliefs need to change. Habits need to change. Lifestyle needs to change.

Your discipline need to change.

For the new you to live the old you must die.

In my mid 20's to early 30's I dealt with a chronic low back pain.

I went to a Chiropractor & he told me I'd have live with the pain & get adjustments for the rest of my life.

I said fuck that, searched for a different solution & fixed my back.

Here's how I did it: Image
I started by assessing the problem & finding the root of the issue.

My pain had nothing to do with my spine but from having a weak core & inactive glutes.

Every time I'd lift I'd make the problems worse because both these areas of my body would not fire off.

So I went to work. Image
To strengthen my core I incorporated a series of exercises called The McGill Big 3 that consisted of:

1. The McGill Crunch
2. Bird Dogs
3. Side Planks

I did this every day and before I worked out.

Top 12 ways to get BETTER sleep 😴

In my 20's & 30's I had horrible sleep.

I'd have trouble going to bed & when I did doze off I'd have trouble staying asleep.

Now in my 40's I'm sleeping better than ever even while being a semi-new dad.

Here's how:
1. Sleep in a cold room. I usually keep the room at 69 to 71 degrees farenheit.

2. Sleep with a weighted blanket that’s 10% of your bodyweight.
3. If you look at screens use blue light blockers 3 hours before going to bed.

4. Take magnesium glycinate and L-theanine at least 3 hours before bed.

Top 13 Weight Loss Mistakes

I used to be embarrassed about my body so much that I wore shirts to the pool.

I got so fed up with myself that I became obsessed about fat loss.

I got my body in shape & spent the past 18 years helping others do the same.

Here's what I learned:
1. Calories are determine how much weight you lose. Hormones determine your hunger & appetite.

2. One of the best things you can do is put your body on a schedule of eating. The more routine you can make eating the easier it is to diet.
3. Eliminate snacking & all form of mindless eating.

4. You don't need to eliminate carbs but you probably need to reduce the amount you're eating.

10 Biggest Workout Mistakes

I've been lifting for 20 years and coaching for 18 of them.

I've made a lot of mistakes in my lifetime. Here are 10 things I wish I said to my 20 years old self to avoid them:
1. It's not enough to lift big weights. You must use proper form.

2. 4 seconds down. 2 seconds up. Time under tension is one of the best ways to maximize muscle growth.
3. Self massage, mobility stretches & muscle activation bulletproof your body from injury & should be staples in everyone's warm up.

4. No amount of exercise is gonna make up for having shitty eating habits.
