Did I just read article on bon appetit telling ppl to not eat iodized salt bc it “tastes bad”? 🤦🏽‍♀️

Was looking up what kosher salt is & this article starts w desc iodized salt “iodine is a halogen & makes salt taste bad”

Do ppl in this country not know why we have iodized salt?!
FTR you need iodine in your diet so you don’t get horribly sick w an iodine deficiency that trashes your thyroid [look up goiter] & there aren’t great sources of dietary iodine available to many ppl & iodized salt is a v effective public health intervention
Like sure eat other types of salt too bc it tastes good [I love black salt aka Himalayan pink salt for example] but you should also eat iodized salt bc you need iodine
Some days I feel extra “immigrant from exploited country” when I see signs of ppl taking public health interventions for granted here

I just wanna be like “do you ppl realize how lucky you are to have access to iodized salt & vaccines?”
OMG I went to bed & woke up to vociferous discussion on this really random thread I wrote that I thought 5 ppl would read

I generally try to respond to everyone replying but sowwie folks too many notifications so I’m muting now.
FWIW I did mention upthread that there are other sources but not accessible to everyone

I grew up in Pakistan & while I was personally privileged w access to health interventions, we had constant WHO public health ads on TV abt iodized salt, polio vaccines, birth control etc
Why do so many of you care abt a throwaway thread abt salt lol

I have many interesting things to say abt anti war ethics in STEM, feminism/gender Justice & disability justice

But salt is what the ppl want?!

J/k I ❤️ salt #POTSie
Also this has reached “promote something” levels

All I’d ask ppl is to pls wear masks (as good quality as you can afford), keep up to date w COVID shots & pls avoid COVID unsafe activities like unnecessary travel & gatherings. You’re saving lives of ppl like me #HighRiskCOVID19
Since my Twitter app is glitching & keeps showing me notifications on a muted 🧵, back to be like lay off being mean to disabled ppl in subthreads. many of us have various dietary restrictions that are hijacked by diet culture but no space for ableist comments here.
There are valid concerns & discussions to be had abt conflicting access needs & how to accommodate everyone having access to safe nutritious food but esp abled ppl need to step back & listen to disabled ppl discussing access needs.
Also I lied abt not wanting to promote other stuff.

If Vitassium or Normalyte or other unflavored electrolyte brands want to sponsor me, that’d be great

As it is my #POTS is putting the salt back in salary w my monthly salt bill
For folks who aren’t familiar w #POTS [postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome], it’s an issue w autonomic nervous system that’s often treated w salt pills & electrolyte drinks & sometimes saline IVs or all 3 in my case.
Update: I’ve been informed by several ppl that black salt (kala namak in Urdu) isn’t = Himalayan pink salt (most of which also comes from Pakistan) & certain things make a lot of sense now.
I’ve never actually bought pink salt that’s marketed to white ppl, only had it in chocolate, & was confused why ppl cook w it bc had read it was same as black salt somewhere. Black salt has a v strong taste & it’s great w certain foods (like raw mangoes) but v v bad w others.
Someone stop me from checking 🧵 so I have to respond to stuff 😭

Ppl criticizing others for having bad ideas abt public health/science pls refrain from using ableist slurs like dumb/stupid/etc. They’re v common so see linked guide for alternatives.

Ugh ok one more. The ppl going “reading bon appetit is privileged “

Like yes I’m privileged in many ways but not bc I read a non appetit article 🙄. Y’all are silly. It was literally the first hit when I googled kosher salt. Which is not great. Given the contents.

Tell me why a “Disability & Inclusion” summit in August is in person w no mention of virtual option on their page & claims to be “fully accessible” !?

Why are disability orgs pulling this garbage !?
Apparently one can email to ask for additional accommodations. Like what?

You want me to email to explain that there’s no way in hell it’ll be safe to gather in person in less than 4 months?

You’re a disability policy institute. You should know this?
Bc I’ve had it,p w this nonsense, I will name & shame.

It’s this event:

I attended a #MyDisabledRamadan event today & have been thinking abt disabled prophets & a thought that came up is that Moses AS had a speech disability & literally spoke to God/dess & when he asked for help bc ppl weren’t listening to him bc of his disability 1/
he was given social supports [thru his brother as aide] not a miracle cure while he literally performed miracles himself in other situations by Allah’s leave.

2/
Obvs speech therapy etc may not have been a thing then so something I find interesting to reflect on as a disabled Muslim around access needs being met vs sometimes the focus on praying for miraculous cures happening 3/

Quick PSA for social justice spaces that like to use meditative practices in your events:

They’re not safe for everyone.
Pls let ppl know what to expect ahead of time & let ppl opt out.
Body focused ones even simply asking ppl to take deep breaths can cause harm.
Here’s an academic paper that goes into detail abt some ways that meditative practices such as mindfulness can have negative impacts on certain groups of ppl:

brown.edu/research/labs/…
I specifically mentioned deep breathing bc it’s such a common way to tell ppl to ground themselves or be mindful etc & yet some of us can’t take deep breaths.

For me personally it only reminds me that my breathing sys doesn’t work well & I end up feeling distressed

I’ve had an offer rescinded too bc apparently I was a bad culture fit for wanting to negotiate salary + absurd [& legally unenforceable] noncompete clauses in the contract. They were apparently not expecting a candidate to have a lawyer look over the offer 🤷🏽‍♀️
MIT career office who had introduced me to them & encouraged me to negotiate were so mad.

The company was a startup, Escape Dynamics, that no longer exists.
& their noncompete incl that I wouldn’t be able to apply for funding from any of their funders for x years after leaving

If you know anything abt space industry it’s that everyone is funded by NASA to some extent. So I’d be locked out of NASA funding for yrs after leaving

when I went on my outing this wk passed by a beachside park & I thought ooh that looks like a safe outing option but I’ll have to find a rollator that works on beach.

Friends I’ve now discovered that an “all terrain” rollator costs $1000+

My current one was <$50

AAAAAAAH
Like I’ve been thinking abt upgrading mine to maybe one that was a couple hundred $ w some features I’d like [like brakes that can be set in position - brain fog lost words]
$1000+ is Highway robbery as they say. I’m offended both as a disabled person & as an engineer.

Like the design is really not something fancy. Neither are the materials. There’s no defensible reason it should cost more than a couple hundred at most.

Ugh I hate govt disability gatekeeping so much. been on disability leave for couple mths. Filed California SDI forms early March. They have all info from my docs. But I haven’t been paid yet. Almost impossible to reach on phone. Got thru today & apparently new “security” measures
I got the form they sent for my doc to fill. But apparently they sent one to verify I actually live at my address & I never got it. No indication online.

So they haven’t paid me at all. I’ve used the EDD system a couple times before. No issues like this.
I asked the rep how long after I send the form back can I be expected to be paid. He said they’ve sent our 300000 of these letters so no guarantee could be a week, a month or more. They owe me $10000

If I hadn’t gotten my annual bonus from work recently I’d be totally broke
