Today is Confederate Memorial Day, which is still a state holiday in Alabama. I know what you might be thinking, but the Confederacy is worth remembering and we should reflect on how it's still with us today. 🧵
Alabama's Memorial Preservation Act forces Black Alabamians to honor Confederate leaders and other enslavers with statues, streets and buildings in their communities. Nowhere might this be worse than in the state capital. 2x al.com/news/2022/01/a…
The post-Reconstruction era gave birth to the Alabama government we have today. It was a brutal time when voting rights were violently torn from emancipated people and atrocities against them were covered up. 3x al.com/news/2022/01/a…
Alabama History curriculum is defined better by what's missing than what's there. For that, we have to thank the quintessential Daughter of the Confederacy, Marie Bankhead Owen, who first made purging classrooms a thing. 4x al.com/news/2022/02/h…
As a consequence, Black lawmakers have to fight for respect in the Alabama Legislature where they defend what history has been retaken from the likes of Owen against CRT bills and legislation to criminalize protests. 5x al.com/news/2022/04/l…
The un-Reconstruction of Alabama is a the heart of many of the state's problems. If you're looking for a way to understand the broken Heart of Dixie, subscribe to the State of Denial newsletter and have a thoughtful Confederate Memorial Day. 6x link.al.com/join/6fp/signup

While I’m working on the next installment of State of Denial, now might be a good opportunity to catch up on the first four parts. In part one, we saw how Alabama’s racist monuments law forces Black communities to honor Confederate figures.(1/5) al.com/news/2022/01/a…
A mass murder in Eufaula, Ala., marked the beginning of the end of Reconstruction, setting the stage for white Democrats to retake the South in a rein of terror that would last for decades. (2/5)

Marie Bankhead Owen — a woman so racist she fought women’s suffrage because it might lead to Black people voting — led an early purge of Alabama history curricula, misshaping Alabamians’ understanding of their own state. (3/5) al.com/news/2022/02/h…

Alabama GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim James has blasted an LBGTQ-friendly charter school for having a drag show. So I took a look at his high school yearbook.

Yep. Every accusation is a confession. al.com/news/2022/04/t…
The Magic City Acceptance Academy isn't merely a side issue for James' campaign. It's the main course. “I will have no mercy,” he said again. “For these faculty, these teachers, this principal who are abusing these children.” 2x
Since James began his attacks, there have been some threatening incidents at the school — people surveilling the campus from the parking lot and screaming slurs at the students. They've had to beef up security. 3x al.com/news/2022/04/l…

After being carried over last week, the anti-CRT-by-another-name bill is in the Alabama House State Gov't Committee now. I'll be live-tweeting as my hotspot allows. Also, follow @greezbock who's here, too.
Ever see a one-minute committee meeting? Alabama House State Gov’t Committee passes anti-CRT bill without allowing Black lawmakers to speak.

This is Alabama's Coat of Arms. Yes, that's a Confederate battle flag. No, it is not historically accurate. Yes, that was by design. 🧵al.com/news/2022/02/h…
This is Keith Jackson. He's a retired Alabama State Trooper trying to get the battle flag taken off troopers' uniforms. It's going as well as you might expect.
This is the bust of Marie Bankhead Owen. She commissioned the Alabama Coat of Arms and coined the state motto, "We Dare Defend Our Rights." She was also so racist, she opposed women's suffrage because it might help more Black people vote in Alabama.

Five people died in the Boston Massacre and it’s in every American history textbook. About twice that many died trying to vote in Eufaula, Alabama. The only thing marking the spot is a fire hydrant.
