For those who need a refresher, check out where we left off:
The Party members leap forward to restrain Samatoki. Riou asks Juuto to explain what's going on, but Juuto isn't at liberty to speak, and Nemu explains instead. Earlier today, Samatoki used a mic on an unarmed (with a mic, at least) civilian, which is a crime. #hypspoiler
But it was a justified usage! Riou asks Nemu if there were any eyewitness testimonies, but Nemu brushes that off. Even if there were, it doesn't matter, because there's no proof that those testimonies were real. The only thing that matters is Samatoki's crime. #hypspoiler
[This reads like a commentary on the overly - sometimes to the point of absurdity - strict Japanese justice system. I also find it wildly hilarious that for a "criminal" like Samatoki, this is the excuse Nemu gave for arresting him.] #hypspoiler
Samatoki, in a broken voice, asks Nemu why this is happening. She reiterates what she said when she left him (TDD chapter 14) - the world can't be left in the hands of war-mongering men any longer. She joined the Party to make a world without violence. #hypspoiler
And, in the process, she realized that people like him have no place in her world. This shocks Samatoki to the core, and Juuto speaks up. The reaction is disproportionate to the crime; is this not an abuse of Nemu's power? #hypspoiler
Nemu reminds Juuto that he is a member of the same criminal justice system and that he must do his duty. He retreats, cowed once again. She continues her earlier explanation - to have someone as violent as Samatoki in her own family is an embarrassment to her. #hypspoiler
It sets a bad example for others, considering her high rank in the government. Therefore, she asks Samatoki, the person that will do anything for her, to oblige her by vanishing off the map of her world. All the fight goes out of Samatoki at once. #hypspoiler
The Party members try to drag him away, but Riou steps in and yanks Samatoki to his side. Samatoki isn't going anywhere on his watch. Nemu tells Juuto to do something about that wash-out of a soldier, and Juuto gulps before stepping forward. #hypspoiler
He stands before Riou and... pivots to address Nemu. Sorry, ma'am, but her actions are an abuse of her power, and Juuto will play no part in it. Unfazed, Nemu asks if he means to disobey her orders. Unfortunately, yes. Both as a police officer and a good citizen - #hypspoiler
- Juuto believes in doing the right thing, and this? Taking in a broken-hearted man when all the extenuating circumstances point to his innocence? This isn't it. Nemu threatens to report him to his superiors, and Juuto tells her to go right ahead. #hypspoiler
Juuto asks Riou to back him up, and Riou gladly accepts, until Samatoki grabs Riou's arm. He begs them both to stop. Samatoki looks pitiful, so Juuto yanks him by the collar - as Samatoki dangles loosely - and yells at him. #hypspoiler
Doesn't Samatoki remember what Juuto told him when they first met? Was that all a lie? Samatoki swore he'd make Juuto's dream come true, and even if Juuto didn't say it then, by god he MEANT it - he'd do his damndest to make Samatoki's dream come true as well! #hypspoiler
Riou crouches down next to Samatoki and says he'll help Samatoki just as Samatoki promised to help him. Samatoki once said, "I'd have to be a real piece of shit not to help a friend in trouble"... and does Riou look like a piece of shit to him? #hypspoiler
Juuto yells that he hates seeing Samatoki like this. Riou continues, saying that a broken heart is not a bad thing. What's important is how Samatoki moves on from it. New strength can come from what was once broken. #hypspoiler
Their words move him, and Samatoki finds the strength to rise to his feet. Samatoki stands up before his teammates and addresses Nemu, asking her what happened to the charm that she had once received from their mother. Nemu doesn't remember any such charm. #hypspoiler
He then says, "This isn't you." She'd said she'd treasure that charm forever. What happened? Nemu's head begins to hurt, and she grabs at it. She claims she forgot, but Samatoki won't accept that for an answer. She tries backing up, insisting that she's still herself. #hypspoiler
But that's not true, says Samatoki. Or why else would she be crying? Nemu is surprised to realize that she is, in fact, crying, and Samatoki steps forward as she quickly tries to wipe away her tears. He's her brother, he says, and he always will be. #hypspoiler
And that means he'll do anything in the world for her. But, he says, catching her wrist, that also means it's his job to tell her when she's doing wrong! Nemu whines in pain and then yanks her wrist away. He's doing funny things to her head! #hypspoiler
She and her fellow Party members pull out their mics, and MTC follows suit. Rapping ensues [which I will skip for the sake of my sanity]. Nemu clutches her head again - Samatoki, panicked, tries to ask her what's wrong - before screaming at him to get away. #hypspoiler
She raps back about how this is her responsibility and how she won't be swayed by him. Samatoki, in turn, raps about how he's still concerned for her and how he'll do anything to have her come back to him. The rap knocks her down and suddenly causes another headache. #hypspoiler
Samatoki grabs her, concerned, and for a moment, her eyes clear. "Samatoki?" she asks. "Why am I here?" Then she remembers she needs to arrest him! But... but why...? Her eyes fill with tears again. "Samatoki, I missed you so much..." #hypspoiler
She reaches for him, but then something in her snaps, and she shoves him away instead. She pulls herself to her feet as she struggles with the brainwashing, wondering why she needs to arrest him. Just then, her phone rings. Nemu looks scared. Ichijiku! #hypspoiler
Ichijiku, looking tired...? [she's not mad - only kind of resigned looking] orders Nemu to withdraw now. Ichijiku did not authorize this arrest, and Nemu shouldn't have acted on her own. But they'll talk more once Nemu returns. #hypspoiler
Nemu hangs up and tells Samatoki he'll be allowed off the hook just this once. She and the Party members turn to leave, but Samatoki calls out to her once more. No matter what, he tells her, he's still her brother. "Remember that." #hypspoiler
A slight pain throbs in Nemu's head. She makes no response but stalks away. After she goes, Samatoki apologizes to his friends, but they tell him not to worry about it. They turn to leave too, but he stops them and self-consciously says "So... about that... thanks." #hypspoiler
Juuto kind of laughs at him and says Samatoki owes him one now. Riou says no thanks are needed, and then the two proceed on their way. As Samatoki stands alone in his office, he vows to himself that he WILL get Nemu back someday. #hypspoiler
Just then, a phone call splits the silence of the office. It's Ramuda, of all people. Samatoki holds the phone away from his ear a bit - Ramuda's really loud - and asks what's up. Ramuda asks if he can pop over to hang out for a bit. Samatoki says now's not a good t- #hypspoiler
There's a knock on the door. Huh? It's Ramuda, who invites himself inside. He says he got past security by putting all of Samatoki's underlings to sleep and then adds, "Hey, did you see Nemu just now? Don't you think she was acting kinda strange?" #hypspoiler
Samatoki grits his teeth and lunges at Ramuda. If Ramuda knows something, he needs to spit it out now! Ramuda cheerfully admits that Nemu's like that because of HIM. He used a True Hypnosis Mic on her to brainwash her. #hypspoiler
For a moment, Samatoki is stunned. But then his face turns dark, and he yanks out his mic. An image of a pane of glass with people reflected inside - Ramuda, Ichirou, Sasara, Jakurai, and Nemu at the center - shatters. #hypspoiler
The chapter ends, to be continued next month, as the shards of glasses rain down around Samatoki and Ramuda. Reflected in them are Riou, Jirou, Saburou, Ichirou, Juto, and the charm. Looming over them all are Otome, Ichijiku, Honobono with her back turned, and... Rei. #hypspoiler
