So I am covering the GOP PA Senate debate and the candidates are being asked to define America First and OMG. #PASenate
Oz is claiming that the reason Trump was so successful is because --wait for it--RESPECT. Oz says Trump respected everyone.
Now they are all talking about the 2020 election being stolen.
The question is whether the GOP should move on from the 2020 election. THEY ALL SAY NO.
Carla Sands is saying that the Chinese Communist Party controlled the "Democrat states lockdowns." These folks forget all the lockdowns were under Trump's administration.
Oz is now saying that he "pushed back against orthodoxy," by which he means he stands against Fauci and COVID protocols.
Kathy Barnette just invoked the anti-Semitic "globalist' term.
Bartos says McCormick was instituting mask mandates at his business and "Oz was living in NJ."
Now they are about to re-write history on Title 42. McCormick says Biden's "open border policy" is "adding to the fentanyl crisis in PA."
Oz is claiming colleges are locking down and "the kids don't want it."
Aside here: U Penn had 800 cases of COVID, so...masks yes.
Now they are all claiming Philly is the fentanyl capital of America.
Bartos says that he is running for the "sons and daughters of Main Street" who are dying of fentanyl.
Carla Sands says that under Trump we had the safest border in her lifetime. (Trump made her an ambassador.)
McCormick says we should treat Ukrainian immigrants differently. Oz says they shouldn't be sent through the "lawless Southern border."
Oz just said biological men should not be allowed to compete in women's sports. "I feel so strongly about it I put it in my ad." Bartos invokes wokeness and says "we fought for six decades to give our girls a level playing field."
Carla Sands says not only is she for laws to keep trans women out of women's sports, but she also will protect children from harmful CRT in the schools.
Oz says "life begins with conception" and "capitalism is a beautiful way" to succeed.
McCormick says he is "battle tested" and Kathy Barnette says freedom 50x and Carla Sands says "I'm a Christian!"
This is such a horrible group of candidates. They were all trying to out Trump each other, even though Oz got Trump's endorsement.
Also, they are obsessed with linking Biden to China, either through Hunter Biden's laptop or through lockdowns.
One interesting thing is Carla Sands said that Fetterman is a string Democrat and she has a history and could beat him. She was the only one to even mention a Democrat.
Ftr, the best candidate running is Malcolm Kenyatta, who can win if people vote for him. He's not Manchin redux and doesn't have any questionable episodes in his past. He's a true visionary.
Primary is May 17. Must be registered by May 2.
There's a typo there: Sands said Fetterman is a STRONG candidate. And she can beat him. She said Barnette lost her last race by 20pts to a "weak Democrat"and it wasn't fraud. This got heated and Barnette freaked out as Sands kept goading her. Most intense scrapping of the debate.

Whoot!!!
Some exciting personal news just now from my fab editor: I have just won TWO Keystone SPJ journalism awards!!!
Best Health/Medical Reporting, First Place for my COVID coverage and Best Feature Story, Third Place for my LBT women in prison series.
1/🧵
Of the crucial prison series they said: "An important series on the inequality members of the LGBTQ community face during incarceration. The reporting is thoughtful and well done and provides a thorough picture of the issue facing many members of the LGBTQ community. >>>
2/🧵
>>>"The use of national data helps support the premise of the series and helps the reader understand why this is an issue that should be explored. Well done."
This series was SO important to me,the women I interviewed were so generous to share their stories. I'm THRILLED!

US parochialism is a big problem in American politics. The US doesn't teach real history or world affairs; adults seem utterly disinterested in understanding that the world doesn't revolve around the US nor want to parrot its politics. It's an issue that's never addressed.
1/🧵
Few of the GOP members of Congress have any sense of politics in Europe, the UK or heaven forfend Black and brown dominant nations. The whole world speaks English and we teach kids to speak....English. (Badly.) There is no collective sense of the US being a global partner.
2/🧵
Yet Americans have opinions on other countries based solely on their current gut biases. Witness the embrace of Ukraine, about which most Americans only know 2 salient things: Zelenskyy seems like a cool guy and Putin is a monster. The black & white POV we have on everything.

Wow is this a good piece from the former (and fabulous) public editor of the NYT on how to staunch the moral and ethical hemorrhaging at the NYT created by Dean Baquet. Can Joe Kahn do it? Sullivan says yes.
It cannot be overstated nor minimized how crucial it is to re-write the coding Dean Baquet put in place of both-sides-ing fascism and with his relentless highlighting the anxieties of white racists. Baquet sundered trust in the reporting with this stance. Jor Kahn must fix that.
Kahn also has to set a litmus for reporters to share facts with the people. Our role as journalists is to divulge not hide what we learn--or worse, use it for our own personal gain. It's not hyperbole to say we are on the cusp of political disaster in the US due to the GOP.
As some of you know, my spouse has been seriously ill for several weeks. She's had to take a sabbatical from teaching and has undergone a series of tests & biopsies as they search for what has caused a series of visible & invisible symptoms that are crushingly debilitating.

Today she has yet more testing. Thus far it is a path of diagnosis of exclusion. We know it is not lung, esophageal or oral cancer. These are all blessings. But we don't know what "it" is yet. We know she has developed a late-onset asthma (most acquire asthma in childhood).
2/🧵
And we know she never had COVID. But this struggle to uncover just what happened to her subsequent to a bad fall at school that left her with broken ribs, a mangled shoulder and then a bout of pneumonia related to breathing difficulty from the ribs--that is a quandary.

The Wife, a design professor, said, "The artist could have made KBJ large but instead, she's so diminutive compared to her surroundings, yet her power centers the viewer--KBJ maintains her power and integrity within the daunting hugeness of the space. A perfect evocation."
The Wife said, "KBJ has the mantle of the justice system on her shoulders and she is carrying it with strength and power and quiet force. It's a truly great portrait of Ketanji Brown Jackson and her awesome place in our history."
This is a complete fiction. 86% of K-8 teachers are female. It's an absurd claim to say that they all go by Ms. and none by Mrs. or none are ever pregnant. I taught a mentoring group of middle grade kids for a decade until 2016 and they knew the status of all their teachers. 1/
Plus, every kids' movie, TV show and book has stories about romance and parents and a wide range of heterosexual themes. So you have to toss all of those. No pairings of any sort. So no Frozen or Encanto or My Little Mermaid. And no Goodnight Moon, written by a lesbian.

Also, this lady is a right-wing extremist lauded by the likes of Ben Shapiro and Dennis Prager. Her anti-LGBTQ biases are the basis for her celebrity. It's all she thinks about or writes about. People like this are dangerous to our kids who live in a multicultural world.
