Once again, many commentators overestimate Russia's military might in Ukraine, having learned little form Ukraine's victory in the battle of Kyiv. Russia has only made minor improvements: One general in command, some (but not enough) concentration, better supply lines.
1. Russia's decisive disadvantage is that Putin remains in command, just like Hitler, & not learning like Stalin from his mistakes in the Finnish Winter War (Mark Galeotti).
2. Genius Putin is driven by the calendar. He wants a victory by May 9, so he has driven his beated troops to attack far too early. They are tired & need more regrouping & repairs, but Putin has to have his victory by May 9.
3. Pentagon claims Russia has 84 battalion tactical groups in Donbass with 800-1,000 men in each = 75,000 men. Ukraine had 40,000 men there to begin with & now surely at least 60,000. Thus, Russia has barely numerical superiority & is attacking
4. Many count with the original Russian strength, ignoring Russia's enormous losses. According to Ukraine, they have killed over 21,000 Russian soldiers. With normal rate of injured 3 injured to one killed, Russia has lost at least 75,000 soldiers out of 150,000 in ground forces.
5. Russia has not added many new troops, perhaps 10,000. Since this is not a "war" but a "special military operation," it is not legally desertion to refuse to join the army & young Russians are refusing in masses to fight.
6. The Russian soldiers are in foreign land, have no local knowledge & no goal ("denazification"!?). They are a motley collection of third-rate soldiers who failed to refuse to come. The Ukrainians claim contemptuously that they do not know how to fight & just kill civilians.
7. The Russian army has lost about half of all the hardware it deployed to Ukraine apart from the old Soviet heavy artillery, which is its only strong point. If it loses another third of the rest, it can hardly continue fighting.
8. Finally, Ukraine is receiving plenty of good, modern, offensive heavy Western weapons, which are superior to the old Soviet junk the Russians use. Thanks to Western export controls, Russia can no longer produce tanks or missiles or get spare parts to its damaged hardware.
9. To sum up:
Ukraine has far better soldiers & almost as many as the Russians;
Ukraine has better & more modern weapons;
The Ukrainians are defending their land, while the Russians are clueless.
The Ukrainian army has proven superior in tactics.
Russia has only artillery.
10. Thus, Ukraine is likely to win.
What does that mean?
At least, Russian forces will be chased out from newly gained territories in Ukraine.
As in the north, retreating Russian troops are not likely to dig trenches but to rush home & Putin wants a decision by May 9.

Леонид Гозман: "Россияне, которые не приняли войну, будут восстанавливать страну. Главное — не пытаться искать никакого здравого смысла в действиях нынешней власти." "Но разрушены не только результаты усилий последних тридцати лет."
novayagazeta.eu/articles/2022/…
"После Бучи и Мариуполя не воспринимаются уже ссылки на Пушкина и Толстого, как бессмысленно было упоминать Гете после Аушвица. Они перечеркнули русский язык и русскую науку, Победу и полет Гагарина.
"Всего за несколько дней власти разрушили все, что мы создавали тридцать лет — все, что давало шанс на реализацию того очевидного факта, что, как говорила Екатерина Великая, «Россия — суть европейская держава»."

Andrei Soldatov & Irina Borogan: "Vicious Blame Game Erupts Among Putin’s Security Forces"
"Russia’s military believes that limiting the war’s initial goals is a serious error. They now argue that Russia is not fighting Ukraine, but NATO."
cepa.org/vicious-blame-…
"Senior officers have therefore concluded that the Western alliance is fighting all out (though the supply of increasingly sophisticated weaponry) while its own forces operate under peacetime constraints like a bar on airstrikes against some key areas of Ukraine’s infrastructure"
"In short, the military now demands all-out war, including mobilization."

So many in the West fail to understand Putin, but he is quite a simple fellow: an authoritarian kleptocrat. Since he has stolen Russia empty, the economy has not grown since 2014, nor will it. In order to continue stealing, he needs to stay in power. His aim is power & wealth.
Since Putin does not offer Russians anything materially (no bread) he relies on circus (war) & repression instead. His popularity peaked with the war in Georgia in 2008, the annexation of Crimea in 2014 & now. Thus, Putin opts for wars of choice of domestic reasons.
His choice of war has nothing to do with fear of NATO or EU enlargement. On the contrary, Central Europe & the Baltics are so far safe because they succeeded in joining NATO & Finland & Sweden have now seen the light & intend to join asap.

The absurdity of the Western attitude to Russia's assault on Ukraine is striking:
1. For years, the collective West refused to offer even defensive weapons to Ukraine. Obama & Merkel were the main culprits.
2. Finally, late in the day, the West realizes its mistake & offers arms.
3. Yet, the heavy arms - artillery, airforce, etc. - are late in their coming & in small quantities.
4. Western military experts have persistently overestimated the corrupt Russian military & underestimated the heroic Ukrainian army & got everything wrong.
5. Now, the Western leaders are dead frightened that Putin will use chemical arms or nukes or that he will attack them (Germany). Therefore, they hold back so that Putin can kill additional thousands of Ukrainians. How will history judge these people?

Germany's whole foreign policy, "Ostpolitik" and "Wandel durch Handel" have collapsed. The new German government appears to do the best to improve Germany's situation, but poor things they have a lot to do.
1. We have all know for years that the Bundeswehr has been a joke in terms of skills, equipment & financing. Now, poor Scholz has to admit that he has nothing more to give Ukraine. He is not stingy but truthful. Germany has gutted its military trusting Putin.
2. Germany's energy policy is the biggest scandal in Europe. Through her "Energiewende" in 2011, Merkel demolished Germany's nuclear power out of sheer populism. Instead, she opted for dirty lignite & Russian gas. Truly awful in both regards.

Let me look forward optimistically:
1. Putin's war on Ukraine is WORSE than the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-5 for the Russian regime.
2. My guess is that Russia will have to give up all its territories in Ukraine & face total defeat.
3. No Russian leader can survive such a defeat.
4. Putin has done nothing good to Russia after 2004. Suddenly, the wise Russian people will wake up & oust his awful authoritarian kleptocracy (don't ask me how!).
5. Meanwhile, the West will be shamed to set up a serious Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
6. As Putin's regime collapses, the other former Soviet authoritarian kleptocracies will follow, offering a new chance for freedom, democracy, the rule of law & market economy.
7. The Biden idea of the world's democracies strengthening our democratic institutions can come true.
