President Biden is reportedly working on a plan to cancel a significant amount of student debt for low-income or underprivileged people who attended HBCU's or public colleges.

This won't satisfy the rich white kids, but it's what he's promised to do.

By the way, we need a word other than "cancel" for what can be done. The debt doesn't go away; it's not "cancelled"; taxpayers pay it off. This is why it should apply only to lower- or middle-income people, not privileged kids attending expensive private colleges.

2/9
Biden's plan (very likely) will only apply to federally-financed loans, not to money lent by private or commercial interests.

There are, by the way, already significant programs designed to relieve loans for economic hardship or because of predatory lenders.

3/9
Those programs are administered by the Secretary of Education, and since January of 2021 when Biden took office, $17 billion in student loans have already been cancelled. (You need to apply to these programs to get debt relief.)

4/9
President Biden continues to extend the pause on repayment of student loans. This pause was intended to be temporary, and was instituted by the CARES Act in early 2020 to help students impacted by the COVID pandemic.

Note, the pause was created by Congressional action.

5/9
The pause was always meant to be temporary, and to deal with issues created by COVID. It is extended by presidential order, an action which was authorized by the CARES Act in early 2020.

It was not created by presidential order, and not done because student debt is evil.

6/9
This welcome pause in student debt payments was never intended to become a permanent form of relief, and was also never attended to address the issues of student debt. It was intended solely to help low-income individual and the economy to recover from the COVID recession.

7/9
The plan President Biden is currently working on is part of his larger effort to restructure and rethink American education, including universal pre-K, school lunches, better funding for public schools, and possibly free trade school and community colleges.

#BidenDelivers

8/9
Afterthought: Note that President Biden has extended the pause on student loan payments every time the end date has been reached. I see no reason he won't continue to extend it, until the issue has been more substantially addressed.

9/9
If you need relief now, here is a link supplied by a commenter, where you can learn about the programs that currently exist, and the modifications made to those programs by the Biden Administration.

Joe Biden has been in office over a year, so we can add an important statistic to the comparison of his administration with others in recent history.

Below is the average number of federal indictments per year of members of each of the last 10 presidential administrations.

1/3
I also list by the total number of indictments over the entire time each president was in office.

Notice the party of each president as well.

The list is in the next tweet. It includes only the officials who were indicted while that president was in office.

2/3
Avg Tot Name Party
0.00 0 Biden (D)
0.00 0 Obama (D)
0.25 1 Carter (D)
0.25 2 Clinton (D)
0.25 1 GHW Bush (R)
0.33 1 Ford (R)
2.00 16 GW Bush (R)
3.25 26 Reagan (R)
15.20 76 Nixon (R)

Years ago, I wrote a science fiction novel, and started on a sequel, about a team of college students who create the first true artificial intelligence.

The tale dealt with what it is to be human, and with prejudice and slavery, with God and nature, love and hate.

1/7
It also dealt with why the most successful technological innovators are so often assholes, unable to see their own failings and blindness.

Technology hasn't caught up to my novel. We're still far from any true artificial intelligence.

We're maybe far from any intelligence.

2/7
But of course, this story (like all science fiction) isn't about technology. It's about our humanity. All fantasy and all science fiction is about us, right here, right now--because, obviously, we don't know anything else, and therefore can't write about anything else.

Trump and his minions were terrified of a Biden presidency--not just because they wanted to stay in office so they could keep criming and acquiring more wealth, but also because they (rightly) feared an actual DOJ would prosecute them for their mob activities.

1/9
So they committed an offense far worse than anything they'd yet so far done in their petty grifting crime spree. They attempted a vast and complex multi-pronged coup, intended to keep them in power so as to protect them from prosecution.

2/9
They failed to retain power, but they've (so far) partially succeeded in evading prosecution for their lesser crimes. They're instead being investigated (and will be prosecuted) for the far more serious crime of seditious conspiracy.

Screams for ending student loans (even though there've been no payment for 2 years) is the new "But Her Emails!"--a propaganda campaign aimed to convince the weak-minded to not vote for Biden's reelection. This is blatant now: "He Broke Promises!!" though he didn't promise this.
Every time you point out the President can't do it by Divine Command, every time you mention that cancelling loans has to be funded, every time you mention the $15 billion that've been cancelled under existing programs, the response is, "That's why you're going to LOSE in 2022!"
The whole point is to encourage people to not vote.

That.
Is.
The.
Whole.
Point.

It's a coordinated campaign to convince people who aren't paying attention (mostly rich white kids) that their unicorn steaks are more important the saving the goddam world from fascism.

I've gotten into discussions, on Twitter and off, regarding student loans. Let be be clear: I don't oppose cancelling student loans. I don't support it either.

There is no proposal anywhere to cancel student loans, so there isn't yet anything to support or oppose.

1/10
To be accurate: there are existing programs that allow the Secretary of Education to cancel selected student loans, usually in cases of extreme hardship or predatory lenders. The Biden Administration has already cancelled $15 billion in student loans under those programs.

2/10
I absolutely support those programs, and I want them to continue, and I want more loans cancelled under them, as funding permits.

To go beyond those programs would require an act of Congress, and no one has yet (to my knowledge) written a single proposal.

I sometimes discuss the importance of democracy with self-described "leftists", and why it's vital to #VoteBlue to prevent a fascist dictatorship.

This isn't universal (yet), but I'm increasingly hearing them say, "We don't have a democracy anyway. We have an oligarchy."

1/6
Their argument is, It's okay if fascists win, because democracy is already dead.

So why are you involved in politics at all? Why do you push for policies you say you want? If democracy is dead, the Voice of the People is irrelevant, and none of your words or acts matter.

2/6
More importantly, the conviction that "democracy is already dead" is a clarion call to inactivism. It is a declaration of defeat. These dead-enders are purposely supporting fascist autocracy by preemptively installing its software in their own minds.
