🧵 RB Leipzig assistant coach Andreas Hinkel (ex Celtic) tells Kicker they have been well informed about Rangers by a particular Glasgow source. More in this thread to get you ready for Leipzig-Rangers. #RBLRFC
2/ Hinkel: “Of course we have analysed them & collected a lot of information. Among other people we have spoken to on the phone & asked for info from is John Kennedy, the Celtic assistant coach, my former teammate & someone I still stay fairly closely in touch with.”
#RBLRFC
3/ Hinkel on Rangers. “It’s a team geared strongly for the physical aspects. That is defensively robust players who stay compact & defend well. But their counter attacking game is also quite strong & they have dangerous attackers. Not for nothing are they in the semis.”
4/ Hinkel on what makes Rangers stand out: “Their physical presence & morale. They are just inspired due to their Europa games. In the quarter final 2nd leg vs Braga, they had to go 120 minutes & 3 days later in the Scottish Cup they went to extra time vs Celtic & won 2:1.”
5/ Hinkel on what would be a mistake.” You can’t allow yourself to completely engage on the basis of their physical game where they’re strong. If we keep the tempo high & play combination football we can cause them problems.”
6/ Hinkel: “However they have the bird in the hand in the second leg with their stadium that they have carried through the last few rounds.”
7/ Hinkel on what makes the Ibrox atmosphere special. “Of course it’s not as good as Celtic Park (smiles). But there is a particular atmosphere there that gives you the scent of football. History has been made there and it has something special, a raw flair.”
8/ Hinkel on Rangers facing Celtic on Sunday. “For Rangers it was extremely important to stop Celtic becoming the first Scottish team to win 10 successive titles. By preventing Celtic from writing history, they can at least let themselves relax a bit more for a few years.”
9/ Hinkel: “Despite that the derby is really important for Rangers, especially as a win for them would keep open the title issue. So for us it’s certainly not a disadvantage that that they have such an important game scheduled between our 2 duels.”
10/ Hinkel has it put him that the impression is one of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚽️ having come unstuck. “They did come unstuck also after the forced relegation of Rangers between 2012 & 2016. But in the meantime they (SCO) have bounced back which you can also see by looking at the 5-year coefficient.”
11/ Hinkel: “They (Scotland) will have a direct Champions League place from next season.”
12/ Hinkel on fav experiences v Rangers. “These 13 games had everything. Big successes, bitter defeats, but 2 games were really special. Above all my first derby on 16 April 2008 under the lights on a Wed night. It had it all, an amazing atmosphere, 2 red cards for Rangers.”
13/ Hinkel: “We won 2:1 in injury time & it was the building block for the title. Allan McGregor was in goal for Rangers & saved a penalty. And at 40 he’s still in goal!”
14/ Hinkel: “The other one was the 2009 League Cup final at Hampden. We won 2:0 after extra time & I won my second piece of silverware with Celtic.”
15/ Hinkel on who Celtic fans will want to see win.” Definitely Leipzig. We don’t have to feel alone or bad about being in Glasgow. It won’t for example be like Bergamo when we had everyone against us.”
Ende/
16/ For context, this is the full Kicker Q & A with all Hinkel‘s answers and nothing omitted.

The ARD Radio broadcasters have reported that they in their words “were attacked” by English fans behind them as the West Ham goal went in for 1:1. You could hear it on air. It disrupted the broadcast briefly. “I’ve never experienced anything like it.” #WHUSGE
2/ Talk on air from both commentators about being in shock & they feel perhaps the fans who attacked them didn’t like their loud goal shout for the Knauff 1:0. They say no security there to protect them. #WHUSGE
3/ Tweeting this in solidarity with my ARD colleagues. Could happen to any commentator and when you are concentrating fiercely and someone blindsides you in that fashion, while you’re at work, unacceptable.

Watching the Kimmich interview now on ZDF. I’ll post the key points below.
To be fair to him, his tone is one of someone who has learned the hard way & wishes he had avoided getting Covid while unvaccinated.
Kimmich says his it was a difficult time for him. He was lucky his infection was “relatively mild.” But he lost taste & smell & a medical check showed he had some fluid in the lung. Therefore 10 days before he can return to training.
Asked about the fluid, he said he can’t do intensive training as there’s a danger it could travel to the heart and then the absence would be longer. But has been told if he takes it easy for 10 days, he should be OK.

Max Eberl, the live guest on @sportstudio says it’s not a nice situation (14 conceded in 3) for Gladbach and agrees it is a concerning situation. The players are not showing quality on the pitch. He said problem has been cutting out crosses and covering in centre of defence.
Eberl says he’s surprised they’re not playing football that shows they have trust in each other. Not defending as Bundesliga team must. Says coach and he himself are responsible but as are the players.
Eberl says no one component is more responsible than the other - coach, players, sporting director. They will continue to work on it. They will continue to work with people. They now have the focus on Frankfurt game.

🧵 Long BILD piece today on Wolfsburg & #USMNT defender John (Jay as he’s often referred to in Germany) Brooks.
The part in bold says Bild’s information is USA coach Gregg Berhalter was not happy with Brooks in his most recent appearances & that there was an attitude problem.
2/ It points out that Brooks has become the “problem child” at Wolfsburg, subbed off at HT in the 0:3 “horror performance” (Bild’s words) in Mainz & not picked at all for the crucial CL MD6 showdown with Lille.
3/ Earning an estimated 4 mil Euro a year, per Bild, Brooks is one of the highest earners but his form crisis this term means Wolfsburg are unlikely to pay that for him again. Contract up in 2022. Brooks also said not as cooperative as his teammates re media interviews.

1/ 🧵 ahead of Bayern-Hoffenheim (my Sat commentary game) for the world feed. Kicker quotes from #USMNT defender Chris Richards as he prepares to face his parent club. Richards says he wasn’t disappointed when Julian Nagelsmann decided not to build his squad with him. #FCBTSG
2/ Richards: “I wanted to return to Hoffenheim. In the summer it emerged that there would continue to be a lot of competition in Munich & I wouldn’t play every game for a long time. I’m not afraid of competition but it was better for me to go to Hoffenheim & play regularly.”
3/ Richards on consistency: “That’s the most important area where I have to improve, and that has a lot to do with experience. So for exactly that reason I’m in Hoffenheim to get a lot of match practice.”

1/ Thread: On the back of yesterday‘s Newcastle news, it might be helpful to explain to fans of Premier League clubs why their counterparts in Germany don’t view the football world in the same way. Why being bankrolled is not the goal & why both leagues will remain different.
2/ I was chatting to a Köln fan recently about this. For him, Köln is life - shared community, passion. He has a say in the club‘s direction along with other fans. In his words, if big wealth funds or equivalent, were to do as in England, he & others would go & watch Regionalliga
3/ PL club fans inevitably talk about Bayern‘s title wins. But to a Köln fan, this is irrelevant. Every season has its story. It could be (as often in the last 20 plus years) be about relegation & avoiding it. It could be in the 2. Liga or about Europe as in 2017/2018.
