🧵: When you & your kin have never had to worry about the FAFSA; college funds running out; pell/perkins $ coming in so as to buy books & food; the diff between subsidized/unsubsidized; finding a decent work study job & then starting life w/ 150k of debt, then you write this 👇🏾
For many, college is the gateway to break the cycle of poverty that entraps their family. I am a 1st-gen college grad. The first day I visited campus was the 1st day I enrolled. We couldn’t afford college visits- many can’t. I didn’t know what to expect & neither did my family.
On top of the demands & rigor of coursework, many students have financial anxiety. My first year, I was on the verge of having Thanksgiving alone in my dorm, but our Asst Bursar Alberta Deas heard about it & gave me a special loan to get a train ticket to SC to be with my family.
Like me, many students struggle with the demands of course work, work study jobs & the financial challenges of home.
Nonetheless,
many persist & navigate, but in the end face additional anxiety with insurmountable amounts of student debt.
The numbers are staggering!
Investopedia states “1/3 of all American students now have to go into debt to get through college… and [c]ollectively, they owe about $1.75 trillion.”
In no other country are young people anchored with such a immense burden to launch their lives. The debt impacts their decisions: from careers to housing to starting a family. Payments to Sallie Mae dominate the thinking of all young people. And now, we hear this from the GOP…
The American People are always investing in businesses and other countries… and folks like Senator Romney have always been able to thrive & benefit because of it. But isn’t it time to invest in our greatest asset… our people?! An educated workforce makes America stronger.
It is amazing! Republicans are always at the ready to provide huge tax cuts to their wealthy donors who don’t need them.
They don’t blink an eye for trillion $ bailouts for businesses & industries from fin services to oil/gas, but student debt relief is a “bribe.”
Students who are not burden by massive debt can invest in their families and other facets of our economy.
Student debt relief is not a bailout … Trump’s tax cuts to Mitt’s friends was.. but debt relief on student loans is an investment that is long overdue.
I’m fortunate that I’ve had opportunities and jobs to help pay off the vast majority of my student debt, but there are folks in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and even 60s who are still struggling. We must find a path forward & alleviate this burden!
I’m proud that Democrats are leading this effort and many others to provide student debt relief, bring down costs, but most importantly invest in the American people.
This week, Democrats celebrated 12 years of the Affordable Care Act, which provided access to affordable health care to those who need it. Meanwhile, Republicans are pushing their agenda to gut coverage and make health care more expensive.
Republican Senator @RonJohnsonWI has called to repeal the ACA and take health care away from his constituents, but Democrats in Wisconsin are prepared to keep fighting to protect their health care.
If Republicans take control, there’s a chance they could try to take affordable health care away from millions of people.
Democrats and President Biden will protect your health care and continue working to lower the price of prescription drugs. floridaphoenix.com/2022/03/23/fl-…
Today’s jobs report makes it clear: President Biden’s economic plan is working. The economy is booming, and continues to exceed expectations. 🧵
Thanks to the work of Democrats who passed the American Rescue Plan, got millions of Americans vaccinated, and tackled supply chain bottlenecks, the economy has created a record 6.6 million jobs in 12 months.
2021 was the greatest year of job creation under any president in history.
While Republican lawmakers do everything they can to prolong the pandemic, the Biden-Harris administration is rolling up its sleeves and putting in the work to put this pandemic behind us.
Throughout Black History Month and all year long, Democrats celebrate the contributions of Black Americans past and present. 🧵
Both our party and our nation have come so far standing on the shoulders of giants like Fannie Lou Hamer, Jesse Jackson, and Shirley Chisholm, who paved a path for the historic leadership of President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris.
From the fight for equal rights in order to bend the long arc of the moral universe towards justice to pushing back against modern day Republican anti-voter efforts, Democrats are committed to showing up.
My grandpa used to say “if you aren’t man or woman enough to put your name on it & your reputation behind it , then it ain’t worth being said or done.” There is a lot of unnamed bullshit in politics, but no one can ever say that I don’t work my ass off for what I believe in.
I started working at 15 to pay for my own school clothes & help pay bills. Worked throughout college & worked FT on Capitol Hill while getting my degree at Georgetown Law. Worked my way up Capitol Hill as a top staffer, state party chair & now DNC chair.Working hard is in my dna.
I took a race for the senate where no one gave me a shot & turned it into one of the most exciting races last cycles. Started with 100 email addresses and $0, I out-raised & out debated a 20+ year incumbent Senator. Had him begging, crying & gave him the fight of his damn life!
Today, we honor the six million Jews who alongside millions of others—Roma and Sinti, Slavs, disabled persons, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others—were targeted and murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. 🧵
It is the memory of these millions of people that remind us we can never be silent in the face of antisemitism and that we must unite to create a country and a world free of bigotry and hatred.
In the face of brazen antisemitic attacks and as we continue to support communities in Texas affected by the hostage crisis at Congregation Beth Israel, Democrats know that we must fight hatred and discrimination wherever they appear and end dehumanizing rhetoric.
For the past 49 years, Roe v. Wade has ensured that every person has a right to safe and legal abortion. Unfortunately, Republicans have undertaken an effort to assure Roe’s legal precedent is dismantled to put abortion access at greater risk than ever before 🧵
We cannot let abortion restrictions, which exacerbate existing health care inequalities for communities of color, go unchallenged. With relentless attacks on access to abortion, the urgency of protecting abortion access by codifying Roe has never been greater.
We commend House Democrats for passing Congresswoman Judy Chu’s Women’s Health Protection Act and commend the president for leading a whole-of-government effort to resist further incursions upon reproductive freedom.
