@ProfNawangwe :@Makerere occupied a special place in Professor Tumusiime Mutebile’s heart. He always honoured our invitations to events and at the time of his departure, had expressed willingness to participate in stakeholder mobilisation as we hold year-long #MakerereAt100
@ProfNawangwe :During a special event held in his honour on 27th October 2015, Professor Tumusiime Mutebile said and I quote; #MakerereAt100
“Uganda has made impressive strides in both the economic and political areas during the last 30 years. We have overcome those painful days of our history and moved on. I am proud to have been associated with the policies that have brought about the restoration of the economy”
@ProfNawangwe :this is the man whose contribution we are gathered here today to celebrate. As his alma mater, Makerere University is extremely proud to host this first of many lectures in commemoration of Professor Tumusiime Mutebile’s legacy. #MakerereAt100
@ProfNawangwe :Today’s topic “Economic Recovery and Resilience in a post-covid-19 world – the role of Higher Education Institutions” is a timely reminder of the place that institutions such as Makerere hold in the grand scheme of supporting national development priorities.
At the time of formulating the Makerere University Strategic Plan 2020-2030, our environment was characterized by globalization, climate change, high unemployment and the emergence of new communicable and non-communicable diseases.

@rggoobi: Mutebile helped this country to get rid of price control. It had resulted into emergency of black markets (magendo) involving hoarding of basic groceries and other essential commodities.
Mutebile kicked smuggling out Uganda. Due to economic mismanagement, the past governments were unable to collect enough tax revenue to finance government expenditures.
To deal with this challenge, the governments resorted to levying exorbitant import tariffs to raise revenue.
Thirdly, Mutebile helped Uganda to stop printing money to finance budget deficits. Bank of Uganda had been turned into a printing press for money. Consequently, inflation had galloped
into triple digits.
@rggoobi :From the anguish of losing our loved ones (a world total of 6.23million souls – and still counting; of whom 3,597 were Ugandans)to a disrupted recovery and higher inflation, the pandemic has plagued the human race at unprecedented scale.
At its peak the global economic growth declined to minus 3.1percent in 2020, from 2.9 percent in 2019. In Uganda’s case, economic activity was cut by more than half. The services sector was most affected, in particular education, transport, hospitality and entertainment activities.
@rggoobi :The size of the labor force declined with many workers moving from modern and semi-modern sectors into subsistence agriculture. The share of working persons in subsistence agriculture increased from 41% to 52% before and after the outbreak of the pandemic.
