Did you know that the Bosnian War (1992-1995, 98k dead) didn't have to happen?
There was an EU-brokered deal all three communities agreed to. But the US ambassador went to the Bosnian Muslim leader and said he can renege on it. Which he promptly did.
A short 🧵:
Then he unilaterally declared independence and claimed Serbs and Croats living in Bosnia were "aggressors" for opposing him.
At least three peace proposals brokered by the UN and EU failed because the US told the Muslims they didn't have to accept them.
Only in mid-1995, when the US managed to change the situation on the ground by using Croatia as a proxy, did Washington jump in and say "NOW we make a peace deal," just in time for Bill Clinton's re-election campaign!
The confused Muslims treated the talks in Dayton, Ohio like every other sham negotiation, until Richard Holbrooke told them to get with the program. It's all in his 1998 book, "To End A War," self-serving as it is.
Basically, the US unconditionally backed every Bosnian Muslim demand - until it didn't. They signed the Dayton deal thinking it would be an armistice and they could restart the war with US weapons and training. That never happened (for several reasons).
Now if any of this sounds familiar... that's because it's happening all over again with Ukraine.

I see corporate media idiots and DNC attack dogs are channeling Ghoul McCain and accusing Rand Paul of "working for Putin" over the Soviet Union comment. Typical midwittery.
I actually listened to Blinken's full exchange with Paul, and the Kentucky senator was making a point that Russia had open issues with post-Soviet states - countering Blinken's implication that Moscow does not dare attack NATO members because "NATO stronk" or some such.
But hey, let's attack a senator for daring to notice the obvious fact that threatens the Narrative about the Current Thing. Because you've learned nothing about his exchanges with Saint Fauci, right?
The country of my birth destroyed itself (with ample help from outside, but still) when I was 15. I've been trying to warn the people of my adoptive country for years, so they can avoid the same fate, but it doesn't seem to be working. I wish I could do better.
You do NOT want Bosnia to happen here. But all I see, all day, every day, is people who have NO CLUE what an actual sectarian war is like trying to provoke one here. Who think there's a winner in such a war. Who think they will be that winner.
My people have a saying, "The well-fed don't believe the hungry." I didn't understand it for the longest time, but I think I do now. You just can't explain to someone who's never felt war in person how utterly awful it is. By the time they learn from experience, it's too late.
In light of #MH17 accusations today, I'd like to remind you of a forgotten - but very relevant - story from the Bosnian War. (THREAD)
On September 3, 1992, an Italian G-222 turboprop plane, supplying humanitarian aid to Sarajevo, was shot down between Kiseljak and Konjic. This was territory controlled by Bosnian Croats, and there were local media reports of militia boasting they did it.
But because this did not fit the Narrative, the incident was blamed on Bosnian Serb aircraft, and the UN passed Resolution 781, creating a no-fly zone over Bosnia.
Back in the 1970s, the Polish-born Zbigniew Brzezinski suggests to President Jimmy Carter to send aid to Muslim "holy warriors" (mujahideen) in Afghanistan, so as to embroil the USSR in their own Vietnam.
The official line was that US aided the "brave anti-Communist freedom fighters" only AFTER the USSR sent troops into Afghanistan in December 1979, of course.
Except Brzezinski boasted in a 1998 interview about how he used the Afghanistan war to end the Soviet Union and free his beloved Poland: voltairenet.org/article165889.…
Let me see if I got this right. For the past two years, we've been hearing incessantly that "Russia meddled in our democracy" - not just from Democrats who originated it, but from idiot Republicans who very much miss the Cold War. (thread)
Democrats claim that Russia meddled because it wanted Trump to win over Hillary Clinton. But the chief source for "Trump's Kremlin ties" claim is the Steele Dossier, which was entirely bought and paid for by Clinton's campaign, using Perkins Coie and the DNC as cut-outs.
Republicans agree that Russia meddled, but say it was to "sow chaos" because Putin Bad, and this gives them an excuse to perpetuate the Empire. They figure Trump will eventually leave, but their racket is forever.
