A very unecessary deep dive into the meaning of Ed and Stede's rings: a thread :)
My theory is that the rings each character wears represent how the other one views them so Stede's rings represent how Ed views Stede and vice versa. 1/14
disclaimer: this may literally be me looking way too deep into things but hey it was fun and might b interesting! 2/14
Ok so Stede has three rings.
tiger's eye: prosperity, willpower, compassion
turquoise: peace, wisdom, balance
aventurine: protection, luck, optimism 3/14
Clearly Ed sees Stede as someone who is intelligent and deeply intriguing. Not only is Ed attracted to Stede's finery he's also attracted to Stede's gentle parenting of the crew and the way he engages with his crew. Ed has probably never seen that in his life. 4/14
He was never modeled compassionate behavior (his abusive dad and Hornigold) and on his ship he ruled with an iron fist bc he didn't know tht anything else was an option. Stede was like this light (house) to Ed illuminating the possibilities of tenderness 5/14
When Ed leaves with Calico Jack in ep 8 he realizes tht he likes the world that Stede exists in much better than his old cut throat one. He likes the softness and the emotional safety that being w/ Stede affords him. 6/14
He can finally just trust someone and love someone and not be stuck in relationships where they're constantly at different stages of fucking each other over. 7/14
ed has 5ish rings but it seems to me that most of them are gold bands. He has two red rings and I think they are a ruby and a garnet but they could both be rubies.
ruby: confidence, "king of stones", riches
garnet: passion, strength, commitment stone (; 8/14
Ed is everything Stede wants to be. He' s strong, powerful, respected, and confident (even if alot of tht is a facade, stede can't even put on that facade). 9/14
And yet he doesn't make Stede feel bad for being less traditionally masculine, in fact he encourages it while also teaching him his pirate-y ways!!! 10/14
Although Ed thinks of himself as not worth of nice things he is clearly wealthy enough to afford them (which makes it even more sad that he doesn't have any). 11/14
To Stede Ed is richer than he'll ever be in terms of life experience. Ed lived the life Stede wanted to, Ed is the person who Stede wants to be. 12/14
And Ed is definitely badass but hes also so kind and gentle with Stede. Stede has never had people around him encourage and uplift his soft-ness but Ed does. 13/14
Ed makes stede feel safe to be himself and deeply values him. And I don't think Stede fully understands that himself bc he's incredibly insecure and de-values himself. 14/14
