I've never read the books but Game of Thrones was bad in this regard too. Maybe not as bad (maybe? Idk I quit watching GoT early on) but still bad. Is this a GRRM thing or do people thing it needs to be gross and awful as a TV adaptation?

Since we've all decided that @TaikaWaititi needs a cowboy movie to complete his vampire and pirate trilogy, I want to introduce you to Walter Scott and Albert Johnson
Walter Scott was a fake gold prospector. He sold fake investments and defrauded a variety of New Yorkers, while also performing in sold-out theatrical shows about himself, AT WHICH HE WAS ARRESTED FOR FRAUD
One man who bought his mine shares was Albert Johnson, a teetotaler who has miraculously recovered from a train wreck after near paralysis.
Part of the excitement with a season two of #OurFlagMeansDeath is knowing that they could take it...anywhere. We have so many potential directions they could go in, bits of real history they could use as a blueprint or totally ignore, like, all the possibilities have me gagging.
Is the whole season going to be about the crew trying to find Blackbeard and reunite their splintered crew? Or are they going to reunite in the first few episodes and then have lots co-captaining adventures for the rest of the season? Or is it something else entirely? Eek!
And how closely are they going to follow the history? We know it's only ever been loose, but it has been a blueprint. Will they smoosh separate but close events together, and have Ed lay siege to Charleston in order to rescue Stede (where he was awaiting execution for piracy)?

A very unecessary deep dive into the meaning of Ed and Stede's rings: a thread :)
My theory is that the rings each character wears represent how the other one views them so Stede's rings represent how Ed views Stede and vice versa. 1/14

Boggled to learn there's a subset of #OurFlagMeansDeath fandom who think that Ed isn't canonically Indigenous? Because they don't say aloud that he is? Prithee gentles, the actor is Māori. They cast a Māori actress to play his mother. This was not an accident. (1/14)
Taika has always been proudly vocal about his mixed heritage and the fact they canonically gave Ed a white father and a Māori mother is so important in the context of Ed's character. The show is set at Peak Empire, when England (and Europe) colonised everything (2/14)
There's a powerful thread of subtext of this history within her characterisation and this show doesn’t do anything accidentally: she is a house servant, trapped in poverty, abused by her white partner, and conditioned to believe that "it's not up to us, it's up to God" (3/14)

I also think that Blackbeard's relationship with Izzy was a little codependent. That's why he's manipulated in the end. That's why - when their last interaction was being betrayed by Izzy - he returns and asks for his tea like nothing happened. Izzy gives him security.
And I think he's only able to let Izzy leave him after he has the moment in the bathtub with Stede. Where Stede makes him feel safe and like he'll take care of him.
So he's finally strong enough to let Izzy go after the duel, because he has Stede.

But the next episode, the treasure hunt, we see him grumpy. He's sad about Izzy. And he doesn't trust that he can just stay with Stede - most importantly he doesn't trust that Stede will want him to stay.
He only decides to commit after Lucius reassures him of Stedes feelings.
