THREAD (1/7) This year’s Parliamentary Session ended on Thursday 28th April, meaning Parliament won’t meet again until the after the new year starts on 10th May. The Govt pushed through a number of laws before the year ends which have concerning implications for human rights.
(2/7) Martha of @libertyhq discussed how these laws relate to #HumanRightsActReform at our recent Ask the Experts event: bit.ly/3OL1Mmg. But it’s also important to see how campaigning + public pressure helped reduce some of the most harmful measures in these laws.
(3/7) The Elections Bill: Following campaigning from the @RNIB about the disproportionate impact on disabled people, the Lords inserted a clause requiring the Electoral Commission to consult on its guidance with groups representing the interests of people affected.
(4/7) #PolicingBill: After campaign groups such as @libertyhq petitioned the Government to remove suspicion-less stop and search on the basis it would “exacerbate discriminatory over-policing of people of colour”, it was removed for good by the House of Lords.
(5/7) #BordersBill: Headlines and petitions prompted the Lords to remove a clause allowing the Govt to remove people’s citizenship without telling them. Baroness Verma said she had “seen on WhatsApp groups worried people and citizens of this country” who were “very frightened”.
(6/7) Courts Bill: The Govt wanted “prospective only quashing orders” removing protection for people impacted by decisions later found unlawful. The Lords vetoed it “supported by @theLawSociety, @thebarcouncil , @BinghamCentre and the @PublicLawProjct.”
(7/7) Voices matter. We’re expecting the Govt to announce a new law repealing our Human Rights Act when the new Parliamentary Session starts. Next week, we’ll be sending out our e-news explaining our action plan and how you can get involved.
"At the heart of this project is consultation". At our #HumanRightsDay event today, Mandy from @Warrspeakup spoke about the importance of participation

Today we have been working through all the information and views that was shared with us during our "Co-design a human rights support solution" workshop last week.
Here is some of the things that we have learned.🧵⬇️
This workshop was open to community and voluntary sector groups across the UK. 61 people registered for the workshop.
Groups and organisations from all 4 nations of the UK attended. This map shows the percentage of workshop attendees across the nations.
