1/ My thoughts on support for the (role played by) LTTE.
PS: I have been attacked on social media, news websites as well as certain Tamil diaspora media & called traitor, anti-Tamil & pro-military. At the same time govt affiliated ppl have labeled me traitor, anti-natl & LTTE.
2/The fact I have to first show my bona fides, as it were, by saying I was attacked by “both sides” to show I am being objective illustrates the challenge Tamils face when calling for a nuanced understanding of & means to deal with the violent past, which spills into our present.
3/ As a Tamil who knows & works with people from different social groups within the Tamil community, it is impossible not to know persons who at one time supported LTTE &/or believe in the necessity of the role played by LTTE. The support is complex & takes many forms.
4/ There are ppl who acknowledge LTTE violations but also point to LTTE being the bulwark against a racist & violent state. There are ppl who criticize the LTTE but at the same time say they made sacrifices for the Tamil people. There are those who categorically deny violations
5/ There are Tamil SLPP politicians who played LTTE songs during 2020 election campaign & distributed hand bills stating they were never against Tamil struggle. Karuna claimed he killed 1000s of soldiers & had cut outs containing motto of brigade he headed while in LTTE.
6/All political campaign material of candidates had terms such as Tamil nation, rights of the Tamil people and self-determination. @s_nilanthan refers to this as using the politics they do not do as their rhetoric. To them LTTE is strategic tool which they hope will win votes.
7/Defence of LTTE isn’t static & changes according to context. Women from Vanni I met in Dec 2009 were livid with LTTE for forcibly recruiting children. 3 months later they were saying they felt much safer in LTTE controlled Vanni due to army’s constant visits & surveillance.
8/Just 4 months ago a family member of disappeared person criticized someone for being anti-LTTE & 5 mins later said LTTE “was destroyed due to the curses & tears of the mothers”.
This is reality of Tamils’ complex, schizophrenic & even dysfunctional relationship with LTTE.
9/Fmr combatants have said that military thru repeated interrogations re their battalions & role in LTTE yrs after end of war kept reminding them of their time in LTTE even when they’d forgotten. State is obsessed with LTTE & it suits them to keep specter of LTTE alive.
10/LTTE violations are recorded & accepted by Southern ppl, but decades long violence perpetrated by 🇱🇰 state has largely been denied & those demanding justice are often labeled LTTE. This has to be addressed if we are to have a more nuanced conversation about past & LTTE.
11/Also pro-LTTE sentiments by pro-govt politicians are nearly always ignored by govt & even the Southern public. Why is this? If they are pro-govt do they get a free pass? Why was no action taken against KP or against Karuna for massacring hundreds of policemen?
12/Honest & open conversations about this are needed but are not possible because of a repressive state that will weaponize anything, such as #PTA, against Tamils & Muslims. We need to abandon polemics & posturing & acknowledge contradictions & complexities.
Ps: apologies I tagged the wrong Nilanthan. It should be @Nillanthan

1/.@HarshadeSilvaMP quotes Mr Sampanthan who reportedly said solution to ethnic conflict must be acceptable to Sinhala majority, with which Mr De Silva agrees. I will first deal with Mr De Silva’s position and then explain why Mr Sampanthan may have made such a remark.
2/Successive govts failed to provide solution claiming Sinhalese maj didn’t want power to be shared with Tamils. Maj Sinhalese voting for Gotabaya R whose selling point is keeping minorities in their place as 2nd class citizens, shows racism is deeply ingrained. Case in point 👇🏽
3/In such a context, what will @sjbsrilanka do if Sinhalese want 13th amendment to Constitution repealed? All govts have shied away from progressive solutions, such as federalism due to electoral considerations, which won’t change anytime soon. Where then does this leave Tamils?
Audit reports (issued by Auditor-Gen) of tri-forces provide a snapshot of financial waste, mismanagement and possible misappropriation. Despite this, military isn’t held accountable as these issues/reports aren’t even debated in parliament. @IMFNews
2/The procurement section in the Army’s 2022 audit report makes interesting reading. The SLA didn’t have a main procurement plan for 3 yrs. The plan for year under review (47.45 billion) did not mention the number of units of goods or services to be procured.
3/Procurement of building materials amounting to LKR 367.59 million was done without adhering to procurement guidelines. Though goods worth 135.46 million weren’t supplied since 2019, no action was taken and SLA states legal action cannot be taken against supplier.
On 26 Dec 2022 around 10 men in civvies entered house in Periyaneavanai, Amparai, allegedly severely beat & dragged out 3 men. When wife of 1 inquired why they were beating them, they verbally abused her, pulled her trouser down & kicked her in stomach
2/The sister of woman who was kicked asked same Q & was also kicked in stomach.Women followed them out & saw a white van parked & behind it a blue jeep with Akkaraipattu police written on it.The abductors thrust 1 man’s head under seat, all the while verbally abusing man’s wife
3/When man shouted at abductors to stop verbally abusing his wife, the men began beating him inside the van and drove away. When women went to Periyaneelavanai police to complain, police checked with Akkaraipattu police & said men weren’t detained by Akkaraipattu police.
1/Outrage being expressed about male police officer using force against woman police officer. This incident can’t be viewed in isolation of nature of institution and broader political culture- patriarchal, violent, abusive, politicized and never held to account.
2/It isn’t one govt that’s responsible but successive govts. Police began acting like counter -insurgency force at times during war. Accountability for war time violations are ignored even now & many who are outraged by current actions would likely defend war time violations.
3/Yet it is b/c they were never held accountable that they behave as they do now. Generally, violations committed by police go unnoticed & there’s no public outrage b/c their victims are socially marginalized and ppl with no privilege. Public outrage re police abuse is selective.
Rathinam Kamalaharan who was working for the Civil Security Division (CSD) was arrested in July 2020 under #PTA and released in April 2022 on bail. He has to go to court twice a month and sign on last Sunday of month. He obtained a loan of Rs 650,000 in Jan 2020.
2/He has 3 children under the age of 10. His family struggled to meet basic needs while he was in prison. Even though out on bail he can’t return to CSD & has difficulty finding other work. Crt has ordered them to pay back loan with interest, which they don’t have ability to.
3/He is likely to lose his land (his only asset) as part of debt settlement, in which case they will be homeless.
Most of ppl arrested under #PTA are economically deprived, & marginalized. In addition to emotional stress, their imprisonment pushes families further into poverty.
