A few thoughts about LTNs, based on the many conversations I have had over the past months of campaigning in Islington:
- Most supporters of LTNs tend to be affluent and middle class;
- Support for LTNs is much lower in less affluent areas. Residents of these areas suffer from the shift of pollution and congestion from affluent areas to where they live;
- Support for LTNs is a great example of the concept of "Luxury beliefs". These are ideas and opinions that confer status on the well-off at little or no cost, while taking a toll on the less well off.
So well off supporters of LTNs can sound green and caring (and vote Labour) and talk about how great LTNs are for reducing pollution and that everyone shou cycle, while the less well off and less able pay the price;
And #IslingtonLabour enables all if this using our money while pretending to be the party of the less well off.
