Let me add the beautiful commencing of the 42-day long Chandana Yatra of Lord Jagannatha in Puri, to this list.
The construction of the chariots for the famous Ratha Yatra begins today!
This ancient ritual has been going on for centuries! The Utsava Murtis of Balabhadra, Rama, Krishna
Jagannatha, Madana Mohana, Sridevi, Bhudevi and the Pancha Mahadevas of Puri Kshetra: Lokanatha, Yameshswara, Kapalamochana, Nilakantha and Markandeswara, are taken on boats.
The two boats, Bhadra and Nanda ferry these Murtis in the Narendra Pushkarini. Once upon a time, the temple Maharis and Gotipuas would offer delightful Nritya Seva on this journey on both the boats. The first 21 days of Chandana Yatra is called Bahara Chandana.
For 21 days, there are two boat rides of seven rounds in the Pushkarini, day and night - Dinachaapa and Raatrachaapa. At the end is the Srikhetrabhauri ritual where the boat does a pirouette of 21 times! The Murtis are carried to the Chandanaghara in the middle of the Pushkarini.
They are offered Shitala bhoga, Neivedyams that cool them. A wide variety of foods from the temple kitchens. Lord Jagannatha is anointed with fresh sandal paste and fanned in the light of lamps. It is a beautiful sight! 🤩🙏
I am recalling everything from my memory of going there and observing all these so many years ago! Not sure if i got many names right! But truly a blessing, even to witness!
Meanwhile the chariot construction begins. After elaborate Poojas.
Getting the news of the demise of my old friend, the very underrated Hindustani classical vocalist Pt Rajshekhar Mansur. He was unwell for some time. He was the son and disciple of the great Pt Mallikarjun Mansur of Dharwad.
Atma Shanti 🙏
That's Rajshekar accompanying his father.
Concert sponsored by Capstan cigarettes! 😶
Tonight in memory of a departed friend.
A brilliant and rare rendering of Raga Ek Nishad Bihagda recorded by Shyam Benegal long ago.
Seems like a whole generation doesn't know that there was an actual revolutionary freedom fighter called #Alluri Sitarama Raju, just a century ago! This image was released by British govt. after he was shot dead in 1924.
Do read up about him! One of Andhra's greatest! 🙏🙏🙏
The 1974 movie starring Krishna in the role of Raju was a super duper hit! It was the 100th movie for Krishna. They would air it on good old @DDNational during Independence or Republic Day.
So @AlwaysRamCharan wasn't the first. I haven't watched #RRRMoive but am told he too dons the role of Raju. Many have confused his character with that of Bhagawan Rama from Ramayana and are shouting "Jai Shri Ram" in videos. Hilarious! 😂
Shocking news from Kerala. Eminent Mohiniyattam dancer Dr Neena Prasad was literally driven off the stage in the middle of her performance because a local district judge Kalam Pasha was irritated by the show!
Absolutely humiliating!
Wth is happening in Kerala?! 😡
Neena trained in Mohiniyattam for a dozen years under Gurus Kalamandalam Sugandhi and Kshemavathy, in Bharatanatyam under Guru Adyar K. Lakshman for dozen yrs, in Kuchipudi under Vempati Chinna Satyam Garu, and in Kathakali under Vembayam Appukuttan Pillai.
She is not a nobody!
She was invited to perform in Palakkad by an organisation. In the middle of the performance, everything was stopped because this Pasha sent orders via the local police. He was apparently irritated by the performance. Neena and her group of dancers had to leave.
Hot topic in a WhatsApp group. I personally think the temple did the right thing. Here is a senior aware of his responsibilities. With a Mohammadean woman at home, & several questions about the sanctity of an ancient ritual that cannot be compromised! Temple taking no chances!
It is his mistake if he couldn't bring up his son in a better way! Yes, irresponsible son should have known the repercussions of this! He is free to do whatever.
Don't talk about Secularism now. Keep it outside our temples and rituals. Certain things cannot be compromised with.
You may call them "Trads" or whatever in your hi-fi language. It doesn't matter.
If you are ritually unfit for something, you have no business there, especially if you claim to be coming from a lineage. We have seen several such lineages break because of someone's negligence.
Auspicious day today! The Thirunakshatram of Sri Kulasekhara Azhwar, the king among Azhwars and the birthday of the poet saint Sri Atukuri Molla, two great Bhakthas, whose works continue to inspire us even today!
A short thread. 😀🙏
Kulasekhara Azhwar hailed from the royal lineage of Travancore. A wealthy king with a huge army & admin, and a great poet and a devotee. He authored the fantastic 'Mukunda Maala' in Sanskrit. He visited Srirangam and Tirupathi. Fell in love with the lord of the seven hills!
He was so engrossed in devotion to Lord Venkateshwara, that he wished if he had a rebirth, be wanted to be a plant or stone or dust on the seven hills. Perumal granted him his wish. The threshold into the innermost sanctum in Tirupathi is called Kulasekhara Padi in his honour.😀
