Thread: Who is America's latest national hero?

My answer: Whoever leaked the 98 page "draft" SCOTUS decision intended to overturn Roe v Wade.

I believe he or she supports Roe v Wade and did this to tip us off, knowing the risk of being prosecuted. That is courage.

Initial reactions to this historic event have focused on the shock of such a document being leaked. But I think a far greater shock is that these 5-6 SCOTUS judges would have the temerity to "swing to the fences" in this way. That is what has to be addressed.

It was a poor choice, only drawing more attention to the slow moving neo fascist insurgency of which 1/6 was just one part.

There are many ways that pro-democracy Americans can respond to limit the damage done to the constitutional rights of women (& men, because they're next.)

Overturning Roe v Wade harms everyone in the US, and ultimately the rest of us in the world, because it weakens the country, at a time when we need it the most.

People who want "Don't say gay" to be followed by "Don't be gay" are in positions of power right now.

And for the first time I am concerned that banning inter-racial marriage is also on the neo fascist to do list, because that is how crazy they are.

I find it alarming that such ideas would gain traction at all. This is a five alarm fire, & your rest breaks are cancelled.

Their ideology is no different to those in RU willing to rape & murder Ukrainian civilians with impunity.

Hating or wishing harm to groups of people who are not like you is where this all starts. Most of us learned this lesson from WWII. The US was decisive in our victory.

Until the legal situation is remedied, the existing efforts to support women and girls who need access to abortion will need ramping up. Raising the money, finding volunteers won't be the hard part. It will be reaching those who don't know that support is available.

My current opinion on access to legal abortion is moderate, centrist, and nuanced. It has changed over time. For starters, my opinion should not matter more than that of the person who wants to have an abortion. And nor should anyone else's.

I think that a lot can be done to reduce demand for abortion, through better public health education and access to various services. I am concerned about access to contraception, too. I don't trust these wannabe theocrats.

A sane, workable, and fair government policy on legal abortion access would be great for the US to have. That ain't gonna happen any time soon.

It's more important to restore the access people had before this "draft" decision was apparently made, in February 2022.

I also want to know how soon the number of SCOTUS judges can be increased. There's really no reason not to do this. And there's no time to waste.

I hope that this leaked document gets more people fired up about the midterms. How many more signs are needed?
