Did you know that there are 238 RNLI lifeboat stations around the UK and Ireland? We are shining a light on our different lifeboat stations. This week, the #StationSpotlight is on @PortrushRNLI in Northern Ireland!
Situated on Northern Ireland’s famous Causeway Coast, Portrush RNLI Lifeboat Station has approximately 25 lifeboat volunteers that operate two active lifeboats: William Gordon Burr, a Severn class lifeboat, and The David Roulston (Civil Service 52), a D class lifeboat.
Portrush RNLI is the only lifeboat station to carry out rescues in three separate countries: Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland and Scotland. Their rescue radius covers as far as Malin Head in ROI (60 miles west of station) and Islay in Scotland (30 miles east of station).
On 13th February 1989, Portrush Lifeboat launched in dreadful conditions to reports of two Spanish trawlers in difficulty. The photograph of the vessel, during what was said to be the worst storm ever seen in the area, conveys the sheer courage of the crew in the face of danger.
In 2004 Coleraine Borough Council granted the Freedom of the Borough, the highest honour that a civic authority can bestow, to @PortrushRNLI.
Eight Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals have been awarded to the volunteers at Portrush RNLI. The latest Bronze Medal was awarded to Anthony Chambers in 2010, after he rescued two boys from a cave in Castlerock. Watch the rescue reconstruction here 👉
Portrush RNLI has an active Fundraising Team. One of the most successful events was a Champagne breakfast with 2010 US Open champion and Portrush native @Graeme_McDowell who hosted a Q&A before The Open Championship 2019 at the Royal Portrush, to raise funds for the RNLI.
In 2021 RNLI Portrush’s Medical Advisor, Dr Martin O’Kane, wrote a book ‘Dee The Little Lifeboat’ which has raised nearly £14k for the station so far! The boat’s adventure takes little Dee from Portrush to Rathlin.
Our mission is to save every one but sometimes we can't save people. This #WorldDrowningPreventionDay, with the help of Megan and Brogan Griffiths, we're sharing the story of Haydn who sadly drowned last July. This post is dedicated to him, and all those we couldn't save.
#RNLI
Haydn, 23, was on a first date when he went for a swim near #Hoylake. He was a strong swimmer, an experienced sailor and he'd worked on a safety and rescue boat for open water swimming. He would have had no known reason to fear going into the water that July day.
#RNLI
The pair swam out, getting into difficulties Haydn's friend was able to return to shore and raise the alarm. Our volunteer crews from @HoylakeRNLI and @RNLINewBrighton launched as part of the rescue effort, also involving the Coastguard, police and fire services.
At this time of year, weather conditions can be at their worst. Even in the roughest seas and highest winds, our volunteer lifeboat crews are on hand and ready to save every one. We take a look at a few of these shouts in this thread 🧵 (📷Steve Duncombe)
Whilst out on exercise, crew from @RNLITorbay diverted to aid a sailor onboard a yacht in distress. In extreme winds and building seas, the crew managed to successfully escort the yacht and owner to safety.
Crews from @New_Quay_RNLI & @RNLI_Barmouth stations launched in Storm Arwen to answer a distress call from 4 people on a training exercise onboard an ocean rowing boat. A fantastic team effort from lifeboat crews and @HMCoastguard led to a positive outcome in severe conditions.
We're delighted to announce that lifeguards involved in a dramatic rescue of a man caught in a powerful rip current and large waves on a Cornish beach this summer will receive RNLI gallantry awards 🎖️ [Thread]
For their courage, selflessness, determination and surf skills in challenging conditions, Bronze Medals for Gallantry will be awarded to lifeguards Alex Ashen and Vittoria Farmer, seen here with rescuee Jon (centre) 👏
And for her role in supporting her colleagues, displaying significant seamanship & determination, Lifeguard Theresa Morokutti (right) will receive a Letter of Thanks signed by our Chief Executive. Senior Lifeguard Tom Houghton (left) has also been praised for his leadership.

A warm welcome aboard to all our new followers and supporters who've joined our crew these past few days. These are just some of the many recent rescues that the amazing volunteers you support have been carrying out this week 👇 #SaveEveryOne
.@StMarysRNLI and Sennen Cove volunteers spent the whole night at sea on Thursday battling #StormEvert to assist 22 yachts in difficulty around the Isles of Scilly in 'horrendous' conditions, with winds of 50 knots. In total, the Sennen crew spent 12 hours afloat.
.@HelvickHeadRNLI volunteers rescued three kayakers stranded on rocks at Kilmurrin Cove in Ireland after a sudden squall had capsized one of the kayaks.
We just want to say a huge and heartfelt thank you from everyone in the RNLI family for the outpouring of support we’ve received in the past few days.
We simply wanted to tell our volunteer crews’ story and make it clear that our charity exists to save lives at sea. Our mission is to save every one. Without the generosity of our supporters, we could not save lives at sea. Every one of you is a lifesaver.
We’ve seen a surge in donations over the past 24 hours – both in terms of one-off gifts and hundreds of you who’ve set up a monthly donation. We’re overwhelmed by and incredibly grateful for your kindness.
