Jacob Hoggard arrives w/ his wife for the start of his trial. The lead singer of Hedley is accused of sexual assault involving a woman and a teenager in incidents from 2016. Hoggard has pleaded not guilty.
Jury selection begins this morning. Photo h/t to @AllieElwell@CBCNews
Hoggard was arrested and charged in 2018. There have been several trial delays because COVID. The trial was supposed to start Jan 2021.
Jacob Hoggard officially arraigned. Pleads NOT GUILTY to 3 offences involving a woman & a teen in 2016.
Count 1: sexual interference minor under 16 (this is touching)
Count 2: sexual assault causing bodily harm (teen)
Count 3: sexual assault causing bodily harm (woman)
Judge is telling potential jurors to not search for any information about this case outside of what they get in court or risk causing a mistrial.
How much they know about Hoggard case could rule them out for jury duty. In 2018 this was the biggest #MeToo case in Canada.
Here is how the jury selection works for criminal trials in case you're wondering. Each potential juror has a number. That number is put in a drum at the front of the room. Potential jurors have to fill out a questionnaire about eligibility - ie. Cdn citizen, understand English
Some reasons that could exclude people from jury, ie.. if they know the accused (Jacob Hoggard), any of the complainants, the crown or defense and judge. Or relation to other witnesses
The trial is expected to last until June 3rd. Opening statements will begin once jury selection is done.
Judge says she will ask potential jurors about the publicity of the case and how much they know in order to select a jury that will be fair and unbiased.
This was a high profile case, so this could disqualify quite a few people.
As names are drawn, potential jurors are called up in batches of 20 . They're only identified by their numbers and job description. Crown and defense will be given opportunity to ask questions, assess eligibility, potential bias before Judge decides if the should be on jury.
Watching jury selection right now. We need 12 jurors. Right now 6 men and 1 woman selected. Court is on lunch break.
Jury selection is complete in the trial of Jacob Hoggard. 10 men, 4 women. Two are alternates. Opening statements begin tomorrow. The first complainant is also expected to testify tomorrow.

Court is being shown photo of the teen and parents posing with Jacob Hoggard. The family ended up going to that concert in Quebec. They were gifted concert tickets and backstage passes to where band gets ready.
Different than VIP or Meet and Greet .. those have to be usually have to be paid for. Photo shown in court of Hoggard posing w/ teen and her mom. He has his arms around them. She would be 13 in 2013. Says her Dad was given Hoggard's cell number. Mom would get it later
Fast forward to 2016 - concert in GTA - Hoggard appeared to recognize teen and her mom. She's saying that she copied Hoggard's cell number from her mom's phone. At the concert- Hoggard asked where her dad was. She told him her parents were separated.

The trial judge is Justice Jillian Roberts

The Crown is Jill Witkin, she's also chair of the Criminal Law Division's sexual violence advisory group.
Before this begins - just a warning that some disclosure/evidence that will be presented could be disturbing and traumatizing.
Thread: As the occupation of downtown Ottawa ends, I want to share some info that didn’t make it in my official reporting. Much of my focus has been on the Coventry logistics camp. 1) because it’s relatively close to my home 2) I was intrigued after I saw this on my 1st visit
The man in the video is an Afghanistan veteran. After seeing how he was walking around -I wondered how much military expertise was involved. I was also getting sent names of anti-vax officers who were participating. That lead to this article cbc.ca/amp/1.6345854
Here is more reporting on investigations into active soldiers who may be involved in protest . cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
But locals were also donating supplies, food/ generators/ toys, tents. There was a list of people opening their homes up for protesters to take shower
Here is retired Windsor district fire chief Winton Marchant. He called me “fake news” but agreed to an interview. We were cordial.
Informing Marchant’s view. During the pandemic he says he’s had appointments cancelled for his heart condition. Friends who had cancer had treatment delayed. He also got 3 tickets for violating gathering limits. He is anti-COVID vaccines
I’m at Coventry Road supply camp. Protesters are tearing down as they just heard that police are coming here.
There is confusion because even as people tear down, other supporters are coming into the camp asking for instructions on how to get downtown to support protesters
They are not giving up or in retreat protesters say. There is a plan to regroup somewhere else.
Before this massive show of force, policing this occupation was costing $800,000 a day. That was before the huge influx of officers we’ve seen these past two days.
So on day 22- that’s at least $17.6 million dollars.
Former police board member @MeehanCarolAnne : Why were trucks allowed downtown in the first place? We’re going to have to question the intelligence former police chief received.
Also @MeehanCarolAnne :Policing in Ottawa is “jurisdictional nightmare”
Ottawa Police responsible for city streets
RCMP responsible for federal properties ie.Parliament Hill
Ont.Prov Police - highways
Gatineau Police - jurisdiction begins at halfway mark on bridges across river
