I've been deep in conversation on FB and IG about this, so I'm sharing my opinion here, too, just so I'm crystal clear on my position.

When I posted the appearance of #MarilynMonroe's dress at the #MetGala, I did not share any of my feelings about it. But I will now. #TCM 1/7

This never should have happened. This is a dress that's culturally significant to both the film and fashion communities and a tremendous amount of work has gone into its preservation since 1962. For those of us who wear vintage, we know how fragile these garments can be. #TCM 2/7

#JeanLouis' gown is beyond fragile, especially because of the delicate fabric. But even the thread ages - as I've discovered in my own vintage - so the littlest bit of movement can cause strain on the garment and you run the risk of damage. #TCM #MetGala #MarilynMonroe 3/7

KK may have "only" worn the real dress up the #MetGala stairs and then changed, but with a wiggle dress design - which does not allow for a long stride - the stairs may have been the worst possible place she could have worn it. Potential damage with every. single. step. #TCM 4/7

Garments that are preserved are kept in temperature controlled rooms and go through a number of steps with professionals to protect them whether they're being stored or displayed. They're not meant to ever be worn. #TCM #MetGala #MarilynMonroe 5/7

When someone goes against protocol and puts on a preserved garment, they're now exposing it to the elements in addition to whatever lotion, self-tanner, body makeup, perfume, hairspray, etc. is being worn. All of it damaging no matter how careful you think you are.#TCM 6/7

I know KK wanted to wear this dress bec she "loves" #MarilynMonroe. But if she really loved her, she would have worn a replica the entire time. She actually dishonored Marilyn by wearing the real dress. And shame on @Ripleys for loaning it out to wear. They know better. #TCM 7/7

P.S. Shame on @met_costume + #AnnaWintour, too. #CostumeInstitute has a mission of preservation, so they def knew better than to bless KK wearing #MarilynMonroe's actual dress for ANY length of time. In addition to physical damage, pure MM provenance of dress is now ruined. #TCM
