The Tribunal’s Lead Prosecutor, Almudena Bernabeu has investigated the conduct of the Sri Lankan government in the case of the unsolved murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge. The indictment alleges the government’s complicity in the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge.
During the first day, the Prosecutor will hear witnesses on the context of impunity for crimes against journalists in Sri Lanka.

Guarantees of protection for journalists do not exist in Sri Lanka. At least 44 media professionals were killed or disappeared over the past two decades. Although journalist murders stopped after 2015, those crimes have gone completely unpunished. #EndImpunity
The indictment alleges the Sri Lankan government’s responsibility in the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge. The government has been invited to exercise its right of defense during the hearing.
The Hearing takes place May 12th and 13th, 2022, 9:00 - 17:00 CET in the Hague - The Netherlands.
