The PM and his Government say a vote for the independents is a vote for chaos. More chaotic than the Parliament under his leadership? Here’s my thoughts:
🧵 1/6

#auspol #warringahvotes
1. There can be significant benefits to power-sharing arrangements. Communities get more say on what the government might do, and generally speaking the crossbench is more interested in transparency and accountability than the government ever is. 🧵 2/6

#auspol
2. Independents work for their local communities in a way major party MPs often do not. Independents don’t join ministerial ranks, which means they don’t use their backbench role as a self-interested springboard to higher office the way major party MPs often do. 🧵 3/6
#auspol
3. The NSW Government is currently a minority government, Since WWII, 1/3 State and Territory governments have been minority governments. They are so common no-one even speaks about it 🧵 4/6
#auspol
4. The 2010-13 minority government passed more legislation than any other Parliament and had the highest “productivity of parliament” – most bills passed per day. 🧵 5/6

#auspol
5. The existing Coalition is chaotic and governs with the Liberals and the Nationals holding them to ransom without any transparency on the conditions of the deal. The factional wars on the ALP side are no better 🧵 6/6 #auspol

Australia was just singled out as a climate "holdout" by UN secretary General @antonioguterres . It's rare to see him single a country out like this. What does he mean? 🧵⬇️
👏 Many G20 developed economies have announced meaningful #emissionsreduction targets for 2030.
👎 Not Australia. Scott Morrison still took Tony Abbott's 26-28% emissions target to COP26. This targets is 6 years old.
🥵The COP26 conference was focussed on improved 2030 targets and a rapid phaseout of coal (by 2030). Australia refused, making us a loner among developed countries & a "holdout" on climate.

😡Past 11pm, still debating the Religious Discrimination Bill, ALP MPs trying to explain why they have decided to support the Coalition’s bad legislation, that will still be bad even if amended. Protecting some to lawfully discriminate against others!🤮#voteindependent #auspol
Amendments only try to protect students & teachers. What about an unwed mother nurse or director of a faith affiliated nursing home for example, whose employment can then be lawfully terminated under pry 2 because it’s “against the ethos & teachings”of a religion?
As noted by the Law Council, the definition of “religious body” should be limited to a body “established for religious purposes”. The definition is so broad, it provides the right to discriminate on the basis of religious ethos & teachings for a very broad range of organisations.

.@JasonFalinskiMP & @TimWilsonMP scrambling: either they don’t know how to read a legislation or they are just misleading? Fact: Commission to make recommendations to Govt and then report to Aus public on how Govt plan is delivering. Is the issue being held to account? #auspol
Pressure coming their way: see breakdown of support per electorate and State at ClimateActNow.com.au I am sure all these people will remember at the next election. Share widely to anyone you know in Mackellar and Melbourne, party politics is putting Aus at risk. #ClimateActNow
Everyone in Mackellar that is worried about Climate Change, @DaveSharma is running the same line! The party machine is scrambling. Business, Industry, State and Territory govts - everyone knows we need to plan for Net Zero by 2050. #auspol
