It has been a bad night for Boris Johnsons Conservative party. #LocalElections2022

Now Local Conservative leaders across the country have told Boris Johnson to resign after dismal results.

Let's get into the story so far 👇

The Tories lost the flagship Wandsworth Council to Labour having held it for the first time since 1978 in a major symbolic blow.

Labour has also seized the north London stronghold of Barnet, which was held by the Conservative Party for 20 years.
They also lost Southampton to Labour and West Oxfordshire and Worcester to no overall control.

Labour has also taken control of Westminster City council for the first time since its creation in 1964.

Conservative councillors in the area are said to want Johnson pushed out – as they don’t think he’ll resign.

The Prime Minister was said to have a pessimistic outlook, with the BBC reporting that he told aides: ‘We are going to get our a*** kicked tonight.’
John Mallinson, Tory leader of Carlisle City Council, said Johnson ‘must shoulder an awful lot of blame’ for his party’s poor results.

🗣'The Government are not in touch and, sadly I have to say, the PM cannot be relied upon to be telling the truth.' Picture: EPA
Conservative group leader at Portsmouth City Council Simon Bosher said:

🗣 'Those in power in Westminster really do need to take a good hard look in the mirror. Because it’s the rank-and-file grassroots members who they rely on who are actually losing their seats tonight.'
Meanwhile, Rutland County Council leader Oliver Hemsley announced that he had resigned from the Conservative Party shortly after polls closed.

Leader of the Conservative Sunderland Council Antony Mullen told the BBC:

🗣'It’s been Partygate – it’s suppressed our turnout. Quite clearly that’s the only thing that has changed nationally that has affected this.'
'The best chance of reviving the Conservative Party’s fortunes will be with a new leader.'

Metro will keep you up to date with the latest results, but so far it looks like Boris Johnson has had a restless night.

🔴 WANDSWORTH

Famously Margaret Thatcher’s ‘favourite’ local authority, Wandsworth has been in blue since 1978.

But the Tories are in for a fight to stop Labour as activists launched a massive doorstep campaign to win the council in the hope of delivering a crushing blow.
🔴HARTLEPOOL

Labour suffered a huge blow to the Tories in the Hartlepool by-election last year.

However, at the time, the PM was performing well in the polls following a successful vaccine programme.

If the Tories lose any of their 13 seats it could show the national picture. Picture: REX/Shutterstock
