Just watched @AaronBastani interviewing @EagletonOliver about Keir Starmer. Fascinating & insightful. Here Oliver talks about how Starmer sabotaged negotiations over a soft brexit deal "so that Labour would have no choice but to swerve towards a peoples vote" (1/6). #Downstream
.@EagletonOliver on Keir Starmers 10 pledges: "Starmers abandonment of his pledges is made to throttle the Labour left, to make sure that none of their policies will see the light of day... even at the expense of the planet itself". Damning. (2/6)
.@EagletonOliver on Keir Starmer's shameful role as DPP in supporting the extradition of Gary McKinnon to the USA, including an account of what he said to Garys mother when she confronted him. The extradition was eventually stopped by that bleeding heart liberal Theresa May (3/6)
.@EagletonOliver explains the circunstances around how, as DPP, KS "simply reaffirms the initial decision that had been made by his predecessor without considering the new details that had come to light, & the killers [of Jean Charles de Menezes] are never held responsible" (4/6)
The whole interview is excellent & well worth a watch. Oliver shines a forensic light on Starmers professional and political career, and it explains so much.
And finally, if (like me) you enjoyed the interview, buy @EagletonOliver's new book on Starmer (that the interview was based on). Its available from the publisher, Verso, with 40% off right now! (6/6) versobooks.com/books/3969-the

Jonathan Powell, Blairs one time Chief of Staff: "Keir Starmer doesn't tell lies".
Starmer told multiple lies to Labour Party members in order to get elected leader. I guess Powell doesn't think they count?
Here's Starmer, during the leadership campaign, backing nationalising water & electricity. He was lying.
Heres Starnmer, during the leadership campaign, saying he was commited to bringing Academy Schools under local govt oversight. After he was elected it was dropped. He was lying.
When asked whether she recognises the results are "alright, not outstanding" Labour right MP @bphillipsonMP reminds viewers Labour had a very good set of results in 2018 (the last time these elections were contested). Really? That's not what the Labour right were saying in 2018!
One headline from the day after the 2018 local election: "Jeremy Corbyn blasted by own MPs as Labour bid to seize Tory crown jewels in 2018 local elections implodes"
This was how Labour right MP Wes Streeting described the 2018 local election results in an article published the day after: "The results of Thursday were neither triumph nor disaster" (taken from 'Moving Labour Forward together').
I see Angela Eagle was chairing Labour conference this morning. Eagle has been MP for Wallasey since 1992, and for anyone who doesn't know the history, this is a thread on how she was selected for that seat all those years ago (1/9)
Lab's candidate in 87 was Lol Duffy & he just lost out, cutting a Tory majority of 6708 to 279. Duffy was the favourite to be selected again in 92, receiving 70% of all local nominations, including 5 of 6 local branches in the CLP, the womens section & numerous trade unions (2/9)
Duffy got 24 nominations in total & Eagle got 5. Duffy was clearly the most well supported, popular local candidate. But the NEC intervened & imposed a ‘by-election panel’ to interview potential candidates & shortlist contenders in constituenies without a candidate in place (3/9)
Staffelkapitan, later Geschwaderkommodore during WW2. Received Oak Leaves award from Hitler personally.
Acting Commander Allied Air Forces Central Europe in NATO 1965–1966
Inspector of the Air Force 1966–1970

"But when Adenauer was asked at a press conference whether Hitler’s generals would also be Adenauer’s generals, the Chancellor replied that NATO would probably not accept 18yr old boys"
Konrad Adenauer was the first Chancellor of West Germany.
