DC is offering structured literacy training to 80 teachers per year, w/ $1200 stipends.

“Great start, but it falls significantly short of what states like MS & TN have done to address a known problem w/ a known solution.” 👏

Every state should be offering structured literacy training to its teachers.

I mean, look at the feedback from #Reading360 in TN! 👏

@AllisterSBOE rightly notes NAEP success in MS following its training initiative.

Keep an eye on the new Secondary Literacy Training in Tennessee, @AllisterSBOE @brookepintodc @NYSEDNews @nyschoolboards @NYSchoolSupts.

It’s the next opportunity once K–5 teachers have been broadly supported with professional learning. 👏

First of all, this is nonsense.

I’m a huge proponent of the “science of reading,” and the only curricula I recommend have kids working with authentic, whole texts at their grade level starting in K.

And they’re designed to nurture reading comprehension.

Just no, @ALALibrary.
I’d like you to review the high-quality curricula listed in this blog, @ALALibrary.

Each one incorporates daily, systematic phonics... AND each spends most of ELA block on reading & writing work beyond foundational skills.

Phonics & decodables are key+

eduvaites.org/2019/11/02/lev…
… but they don’t consume the majority of the ELA block in the most highly-rated curricula. Go see for yourself.

@ELeducation & @ckschools are free, openly-licensed programs. You can download & review the lessons for free.

@BookwormsRW might also be available as OER now, too.

If you wondered whether parent voice matters, you have your answer.
“A prom vaccine mandate cleanly separates kids who can spread COVID from kids who can spread COVID.”

🎯
Farewell to policy that “BC of different uptake by racial and socioeconomic status probably was also discriminatory,” as @VPrasadMDMPH rightly notes.

Now onto those pesky vaccine reqs for graduation guests, youth sports & activities…

And being a natl outlier on toddler masks. ImageImage

@daniela127 told me she’s frustrated that what she feels to be her narrowly focused message—that NY schoolchildren deserve more carefully crafted policies than what they’ve been given—has been lumped in with a larger right-wing, anti-govt sentiment.”

theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
I appreciate @JohnGHendy’s piece on @NYCHealthCommr & @daniela127. But it’s trying to paint them both as reasonable voices amidst chaos, and skirts the essential Q:

👉 Is it reasonable to be the only city in US masking developing children?

A key read:

theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
Is it reasonable to ban unvaccinated teenagers from Prom night with kids they see all day in school?

And to make that call in May, weeks before prom?

The reasonable NYC parents I know consistently think this is punitive.

Heartbreaking.

Parents and doctors tried to tell us this was happening.

Finally, it’s getting coverage.

nytimes.com/2022/05/08/hea…
Never forget that this issue was actively downplayed by COVID Zero Twitter and even K-12 journalists.

The loudest voice, a “suicidologist,” actually said that it was no big deal if the suicides were unsuccessful. And he has viciously attacked docs who tried to raise awareness.
How many people stayed on the sidelines about what was happening to US children because of COVID Twitter voices who’d attack if you expressed concern about anything other than COVID cases?

The toxic US discourse around COVID and kids is well-reflected here by @JenniferSey.

Most weekends, I play tennis at a @Cary_Leeds clinic in the Bronx.

One of the regulars is a mom named Stephanie. She has a fantastic forehand and a high school senior daughter.

I have been hearing about her daughter’s prom prep for weeks. 3 weeks ago, they bought her dress.
This weekend, I asked her thoughts about @NYCMayor’s policy of banning kids from prom if unvaccinated.

Stephanie was shocked and dismayed at the idea. Most parents would be, I suspect.

@GusoffTV reports that “prom season is upon us”…

cbsnews.com/newyork/news/q…
… and families will be buying dresses soon, hence @NYCMayor is acting early.

But it’s May; the girls have already done their prom shopping. I bet there are a lot of disappointed teens like those in story.

I’m glad to hear that some leaders have asked @NYCMayor to reconsider.

How does it feel to watch @BillGates finally say the things you have been saying for 22 months?

Turns out it’s pretty damned frustrating.
Reminder that @BillGates runs one of the biggest education philanthropies in the US, if not the largest.

They, too, stayed silent as this data amassed, showing clearly that school reopening was more assuredly a mistake than Gates suggests in this clip.

I mean…
I appreciate all of the voices naming the issue.

Of course we knew enough to keep schools open.

Exhibit A: Europe. Exhibit B: the US Sun Belt.
