A thread of the 'top' universities in #REF2021 ranked by their #GenderPayGap and #EthnicityPayGap. The UK university median gender pay gap is 14.7%; the UK university median ethnicity pay gap is 9%. #REFresults#REF
1. Loughborough University. This university has a median gender pay gap of 31.3% and a median ethnicity pay gap of 11.1%.
2. University of Exeter. This university has a median gender pay gap of 21.7% and a median ethnicity pay gap of 12%.
Figures are from 2020 or 2021 data and taken from gender-pay-gap.service.gov.uk or university websites. There may be errors. If I couldn't find the data then maybe report it more clearly! Thread inspired by @DrAnindyaR and @carbonatefan, insomnia and a cancelled train.
None of this is to downplay the hard work of individuals but to highlight the subjectivity of rankings and the entrenched biases in universities that the REF both facilitates and ignores.
If you're going to tweet at me "but the pay gaps don't prove that men and white employees get paid more than women and ethnic minority employees, just that men and white employees tend to be in higher-paid roles!!", then yes, that's the point.
