BREAKING: Evgenia Kara-Murza, wife of imprisoned Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza, has just addressed the United Nations with an urgent appeal for the release of her husband and 15,000 others detained across Russia for speaking out against the war in Ukraine. #FreeKaraMurza
2/ @ekaramurza: “Mr. President, It is an honor to speak on behalf of UN Watch. For over two months, we have been witnessing a bloody massacre of the civilian population by Russian Armed Forces on the territory of the sovereign state of Ukraine.”

unwatch.org/wife-of-impris…
3/ “It seems the world has finally realized who Mr. Putin truly is and is now watching in horror thinking about what else this increasingly deranged dictator is capable of.”
4/ “Well, people like my husband, Vladimir Kara-Murza, have known it for over two decades and have tried time and again to warn the world about the danger of appeasing a bully who sees every compromise as his opponent’s weakness.”
5/ “Twice—in 2015 and 2017—my husband was poisoned by a team of FSB operatives whose only job is to physically eliminate the opponents of the current Russian government. He refused to be intimidated and forced out of his country, so he went back to Russia and continued his work.”
6/ “A month ago, Vladimir joined the ever-growing list of political prisoners in Russia. He is being charged under a new law that criminalizes any opposition to Putin’s so-called special operation in Ukraine.”
7/ “My husband is facing up to 10 years in prison for calling this war a war. And he is not alone. Over 15,000 people have been detained all across Russia for speaking up against the war in Ukraine.”
8/ “We know that only Russians can bring change to Russia, but in order for a grassroots movement to emerge in our country, we ask the international community to see these brave Russians who stand up to the Russian government against all odds.”
9/ “We ask the international community to recognize their fight and to stand with them. Thank you.”

UNHRC Chair: “Thank you. I would like remind to remind delegations that you should keep appropriate language in this forum in your statements.”

RELEASE: "We welcome today’s visit to Mauritania by U.N. slavery monitor @TomObokata. That his mission is needed is a reminder to the world that a racist regime enslaving tens of thousands of black people has no place on a U.N. council on human rights." unwatch.org/un-slavery-inv…
"We are calling on U.S. Ambassador Thomas-Greeenfield to make the case to the United Nations that slave-holding Mauritania should not have a position of authority in a body whose purpose is to promote respect for human rights."
"The UN always says that it condemn racism. Now is the time to match those words with action by removing Mauritania's racist and slave-holding regime from the world's top human rights body."

Today we remember how the Nazi warrant for genocide began by portraying Jews as children of the Devil.

And yet so many look away as Israel’s 6 million Jews are demonized by the Iranian regime, Hamas and Hezbollah, and in the West by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.
2/ In the 1930s, Hitler propagated the myth of an evil Jewish conspiracy by distributing the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” a notorious forgery promoted to millions by Der Stürmer.

Today, Ayatollah Khamenei tweets about an “evil network of Zionism.”
3/ The Hamas terrorist group, armed, funded and trained by the Islamic Republic of Iran, routinely describes Jews as evil.

Jeremy Corbyn, former UK Labor Party leader called Hamas his "friends" who seek "social justice" & "peace."

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention upheld in full our petition and ruled that China is arbitrarily detaining human rights activist Zhang Baocheng. He's been jailed since May 27, 2019 for criticizing China’s crimes against the Uyghurs.
unwatch.org/un-rules-china…
This is an important ruling of the United Nations for jailed human rights activist Zhang Baocheng. We now call on @mbachelet, the UN high commissioner for human rights, to raise the case of Mr. Zhang ahead of her trip next month to China and to demand his immediate release.
We call on High Commissioner Bachelet to urge the Chinese regime to implement the UN ruling and put an end to punishing political dissent with arbitrary arrests, beatings and harassment of human rights activists and their families.

Historic day of defeat for 🇷🇺 Russia at the United Nations. They lost 4 elections:

Committee on NGOs
✅Armenia 47
✅Georgia 44
❌Russia 15

UN Women
✅Bulgaria 44
✅Latvia 44
❌Russia 16

UNICEF
✅Bulgaria 45

Indigenous Forum
✅Ukraine 35
❌Russia 18
2/ For the first time since 1947, Russia will not be a member of the U.N.’s 19-nation Committee on NGOs. Dictatorships fight to be there as it oversees the work of human rights groups at the United Nations, and regimes block accreditation to NGOs that call out their crimes.

3/ For the first time since 1946, Russia will not be a member of the 36-nation UNICEF Executive Board.

We said it would be obscene to elect Russia to the UN agency for children’s rights after they displaced two-thirds of Ukraine's children. Putin lost to Bulgaria & Czech.

Son of purged official is publicly punished in 1968 for defending his father. Denunciation rallies, also known as struggle sessions, were violent spectacles in Maoist China where “class enemies” were publicly humiliated, accused, beaten and tortured by people they were close to. Image
Usually conducted at the workplace, classrooms and auditoriums, students were pitted against their teachers, friends and spouses were pressured to betray one another, and children were manipulated into exposing their parents.
In August 1966, girls at a prestigious high school savagely beat a teacher named Bian Zhongyun and left her dying in a handcart. Her crime: while taking her students through an earthquake drill, the teacher had failed to stress the importance of rescuing Chairman Mao’s portrait. Image

1/ Unnoticed in today's U.N. vote to expel Russia from the Human Rights Council was that 🇪🇺 European states effectively changed their position. Countries like Belgium, Netherlands and Sweden in the past would justify the election of dictatorships under a "big tent" theory. 🧵:
2/ 🇳🇱Amb. Monique van Daalen: “We want all countries to be able to become members. This sharpens the debate and is beneficial because...you can address them much better. It is also very difficult to draw a line: when can a country become a member or not."

3/ Ex-Swedish FM @margotwallstrom: “If there is one place where [Saudi Arabia] ought to be—to learn something about women—it's the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women.”
