1/3 Cases/hospitalizations up, now deaths, but not a lot of clarity given many cases going unreported due to home testing. This BA.2.12 is a bad actor especially given only about 100 million Americans (30%) are vaccinated and boosted. This subvariant unbelievably transmissible
2/3 This is a full-on wave almost like omicron. So...
1. If you are not vaccinated, get vaccinated
2. If you vaccinated but not boosted, get boosted
3. If you are vaccinated and boosted, and eligible for a 2nd booster, get it
4) Get your kids vaccinated if they are eligible
3/3 I know it is frustrating, we're all tired of this, but that's life in the big city, we're experiencing another wave. Max out your vaccinations while we still have vaccine inventory, and if you get sick and test positive, call your PMD about Paxlovid but do it early
Our nation is way under-vaccinated, only 100 million Americans are vaccinated and boosted. Also omicron is not providing durable or strong protection. We are incredibly vulnerable to this BA.2.12 wave.

An interesting piece of McNamara’s life not mentioned was how afterwards he became President of the @WorldBank where he helped organize the Onchocerciasis Control Program OCP initially using aerial spraying with temephos to kill the black fly larvae

I tell the story in my book Forgotten People Forgotten Diseases @ASMicrobiology @wileymicrobio

Some say McNamara got the idea when touring what was then known as Upper Volta region of West Africa, and he asked about adults with River Blindness being led by their kids or grandchildren. The French parasitologists educated him about the disease, and he began OCP

1/3 Many thanks ⁦@AnaCabrera⁩ for hosting me from ⁦@RoanokeCollege⁩ where I’m receiving an honorary doctor of science today. Speaking about the JNJ vaccine and the new hepatitis outbreak in the US and globally Image
2/3 re JNJ vaccine (which btw) is an adenovirus vectored vaccine, the serious TTS side effect is extremely rare about 1/300,000 but sufficient for FDA to recommend mRNA as a preferred vaccine. An advantage of JNJ however might be greater durability of protection CD8+ cells
3/3 re adenovirus hepatitis, this is a totally different adenovirus. In US adenovirus infections peak in Spring this time of year. What’s unusual is a strain now rarely causing hepatitis, associated with fever, yellowing of the eyes, dark colored urine, light colored stools

Yesterday @BiykemB @BCMHeart and I tag teamed for Cardiology Grand Rounds @Texas_Heart on COVID-19 and the heart. One takeaway: The impact of COVID-19 on the heart is profound, and the risks of COVID-19 greatly outweigh any myocarditis risk from mRNA vaccination. Get vaccinated.
Another takeaway: a big unknown is the longer term consequences of past Covid infections. Still another in the video are the potential mechanisms of hear disease caused by COVID19

US public funds that went into our @TexasChildrens recomb Covid vaccine technology for global health: around $400,000. But if you include a grant from NIAID-NIH in 2012-2016 that began our SARS/MERS vaccine program I think around $6 million. So roughly 1/1,000 given to pharma
So far almost 30 million adolescent children have been vaccinated in India under EUA (based on a superiority study to AstraZeneca) and now the vaccine has been approved in Botswana.

My take on Twitter: Each day I block 2-4 individuals or groups on average due to their menacing tweets or threats. That increases X10-20 when FoxNews anchors send out an evening dog whistle/attack. If under Elon Musk things remain as is, I suppose I will probably tolerate it, but
…but if each day starts to look like the day after a Carlson or Ingraham rant against me, that would become too much of a time investment and I would to seek an alternative, or just get off social media altogether. Trying to stay open minded at this point, wait and see…
Apologies for typos

I’m starting the slow process of thanking all of the news outlets who saved thousands of American lives in this pandemic. I believe that history will record the community of journalists, most without science background, worked tirelessly to get it right and provide timely data
So tonight I will be Captain Obvious and profoundly thank the @nytimes @washingtonpost @latimes @USATODAY @Reuters @AP also @WSJ with the exception of @WSJopinion that caved totally to the Murdoch’s and caused needless loss of life and I can document it.
And thank you to the Texas media. History will record you as heroes, @HoustonChron @dallasnews @statesman @ExpressNews @TexasTribune @TexasMonthly @culturemap and many smaller outlets
